Work LocationNairobi Expected duration6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UN-Habitat works with varied partners including cities, central governments, local authorities, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector in the implementation of the Habitat Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in particular, Goal 11 of \"Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable\". As cities around the world are rapidly urbanizing, they are increasingly facing urban mobility challenges key among them traffic congestion, pollution and road traffic crashes. The transport sector also significantly contributes to global energy related carbon emissions. Public transport comprising efficient bus systems, trams, metros and non-motorised mobility such as walking, and cycling are emerging an ideal mix to curb the growing urban transport challenges and meet the transport needs of citizens. UN-Habitat collaborates with governments at city, regional and national levels on development and implementation of policy, guides and tools for sustainable urban mobility; provides technical advise for development of effective transport systems and knowledge, advocacy and capacity building. Focus areas on urban mobility have included sustainable urban mobility planning (SUMP); planning for Bus Rapid Transit incorporating travel demand measures; transport institutional reforms and capacity building; urban electric mobility; walking and cycling and urban transport policy. The individual contractor position is in the Urban Mobility team under the Urban Basic Services Section of UN-Habitat. The individual contractor will provide technical advise to cities on sustainable mobility solutions, and supports mapping and spatial analysis of urban mobility projects. The individual contractor will support the implementation of e-mobility interventions and the development of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans. UN-Habitat is implementing the UN Development Account funded project titled โBuilding back safer, more sustainable and resilient transport in the aftermath of COVID-19 in Western Balkan and Central Asian Landlocked Developing Regionsโ. The project aims to develop Sustainable Urban Mobility plans in the countries and facilitate participatory processes. The UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) supported project โGlobal Alliance of Cities for Road Safety (ACROS)โ aims to establish to provide capacity building and technical assistance on all five pillars of the Safe Systems approach. UN-Habitat is furthermore supporting the implementation of the Pan-African Action Plan for Active Mobility and its roll-out in five African Countries. UN-Habitat is also embarking on a project titled โPort of Dar es Salaam - Transport and Trade improvement project (PORTZA)โ aiming at enhancing trade and transport efficiency in key economic sectors in Tanzania to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth. Moreover, UN-Habitat is working on a project called โACCESS โ Accelerating Access to Low Carbon Urban Mobility Solutions through digitalizationโ with the aim to measurably reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector in urban areas in six Latin American countries. The consultant will support its implementation in Ecuador and Argentina. The Individual Contractor will work under the overall supervision of the Coordinator of the Urban Basic Services Section, and in close collaboration with the thematic team on mobility reporting to the Programme Management Officer, Urban Mobility. Duties and Responsibilities The Project individual contractor will assist the work of the Urban Mobility Team in the Urban Basic Services Section by providing the following: - Support capacity building efforts in the fields of sustainable mobility with a focus on spatial analysis and mapping; - Support monitoring and tracking of the impact of the projects of the urban mobility team; - Support the digitization, data collection, analysis and development of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans incl. the creation of land use/ transport network plans, transport modelling, accessibility analysis etc; - Support the review and drafting of mobility related policies and strategies; - Support research and development of knowledge products with a focus on sustainable, inclusive and low carbon urban mobility; - Support the analysis of trends on emerging topics in the field of sustainable urban mobility; among others. Qualifications/special skillsโข High School Diploma is required. A university degree in urban development, geoinformatics or spatial analysis related issues is an added advantage. โข One (1) year working experience in the field of sustainability, international affairs or urban development is required. โข An understanding of urban planning, geoinformatics and spatial data analytics is required. โข Good interpersonal skills, previous exposure to cross cultural environments is advantageous. โข Ability to work well in a team whilst also having the capacity and initiative to work independently is required. โข At least 6 months working experience in the field of sustainability, spatial analysis and geoinformatics, or urban development is required. โข Excellent analytical and communication skills. The ability to draft a wide selection of written communication and to articulate ideas in a clear and concise manner. โข Research skills are an asset. โข Ability to work well in a team whilst also having the capacity and initiative to work independently is required. โข UN experience required.
