The PositionThe Social Media Coordinator develops compelling content and stories for Mercy Corps' global social channels including Facebook, Instagram, and X with a focus on identifying timely narratives and creating engaging copy that drives audience engagement and supports organizational priorities.Essential ResponsibilitiesCONTENT CREATION & STORYTELLINGยท Research and develop compelling content ideas, working with the Director of Marketing Strategy to identify timely stories and trending topics that align with current events and organizational priorities.ยท Produce concepts for thumb-stopping social content: For instance, hurricane season is coming up: youโ€™ll be asked to research and present 3-4 relevant story options with a brief rationale for social media use.ยท Write engaging, platform-specific copy for social posts. Use AI tools for brainstorming, as needed, and apply editorial judgment and human insight for final content.ยท Produce and/or edit visual assets including basic graphics and simple videos, using tools like Canva (mandatory basic proficiency), Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms.ยท Monitor trending topics and news cycles to identify content opportunities that align with Mercy Corps' mission and current programming.ยท Collaborate with internal teams to source authentic stories from program work and field operations.CONTENT STRATEGY & CHANNEL MANAGEMENTยท Schedule and post content across owned channels using social media management platforms like Sprout Social (mandatory basic proficiency) or similar tools.ยท Support the Director of Marketing Strategy in developing and executing channel strategy.ยท Stay up to date on emerging platforms, technologies, and industry best practices.CROSS TEAM SUPPORTยท Manage social media requests to support internal and external social needs (supporting advocacy initiatives, partnership obligations, and staff thought leadership)ยท Ensure social plans and assets are available in a centralized, accessible location (e.g. Global Social Microsoft Shared Drive) for use of internal teams, partners, European social teams, etc.COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTยท Monitor social media channels and respond to comments when appropriate, escalating sensitive content to appropriate parties as needed.Supervisory Responsibilityยท NoneAccountabilityReports Directly To: Director of Brand MarketingWorks Directly With: Graphic designer, video editor, photographer, Creative Director, and other members of the Brand Marketing Team.Accountability to Participants and StakeholdersMercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skillsยท 1-3 years of professional experience in a relevant field, e.g. marketing, communications, PR, etc.ยท At least one year of experience (internships included) managing social media and creating social content on behalf of a brand.ยท Strong copywriting and storytelling abilities with experience crafting platform-specific content that engages diverse audiences.ยท Strong familiarity with platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.ยท Exceptional attention to detail and ability to ensure accuracy in all deliverables.ยท Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to communicate clearly and passionately, both in writing and verbally.
