Work LocationMontreal – Hybrid remote and in the office Expected duration3 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganizational Setting The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signature in Rio in 1992. The Convention has 196 Parties and has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by the United Nations Environment Programme. Its main tasks are to arrange for and service meetings of the Conference of the Parties, including preparation of pertinent documentation, operation of the central node of the clearing-house mechanism, liaison and coordination with other international bodies and processes and, in close collaboration with these partners, the provision of technical support for the effective implementation of the Convention. In its decision 16/9 paragraph 11 (c), the Conference of Parties requested the Executive Secretary to further develop and strengthen the central portal of the clearing-house mechanism, including through the improvement of the accessibility of relevant information, in line with the programme of work for the clearing-house mechanism. The DevOps team is responsible for all IT solutions, including websites and platforms of the SCBD. Duties and Responsibilities [Consultant 1 - Framework Upgrade] Under the supervision of the Information Systems officer, the consultant will work with the DevOps team to upgrade the programming frameworks of SCBD applications to Vue/Nuxt. These include but may not be limited to: • Kronos • CHM • Eunomia Specific priorities and activities will be decided by the Information Systems Officer supervising the project. Qualifications/special skillsAcademic Qualifications Completion of a Bachelor’s (first level) degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Communication Technology or related fields is required. Working Experience At least five years of experience in web development is required. Proven experience in the development of web applications, design and technical implementation of user interfaces in a web-based environment is required. Solid understanding of the concepts of user experience (UX), user interface design principles and conceptual design is required. Expert knowledge in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, knowledge of Bootstrap, jQuery and AngularJS/Vue 3/React, REST API is required. Basic understanding of Drupal or other Content Management Systems is desirable. Skills which are required: • Ability to work independently or as an active member of a team • Confident in producing work across multiple platforms • Able to align multiple strategies and ideas • Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently Competencies required Communication: Good spoken and written communication skills, including the ability to liaise with technical staff and present information in a clear and concise style. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is desirable.
