DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall guidance of the Senior Director of the Services Department (SD/S), and the joint supervision of the Head of the WHO-WMO Climate and Health Joint Office the tasks of the Senior Advisor for Extreme Heat will provide expert advice and strategic support to the WHO-WMO Joint Office for Climate and Health, the GHHIN Network, and WMO subsidiary bodies responsible for health and extreme heat-related activities:

Specific tasks include:
1. Support and guide the development of an advisory group on extreme heat, including support to the planning and organization of expert meetings, workplan, drafting and reviewing key strategic documents, Terms of Reference, and participating in selection panels.

2. Provide expert advice and support to the publication of WMO guidance documents on extreme heat.

3. Support the review and development of heat-related training materials and technical products.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Ph.D. or equivalent in meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, earth, physical or natural sciences, or a closely related field.
Experience
15 years' work experience in NMHS operational forecasting and development of heatwave early warning systems and services.
Other requirements
Extensive experience in developing strategic alignment between diverse partners and shaping multi-stakeholder partnerships; particularly with the health sector and public health agencies;

Recognized expertise and technical knowledge in the development and use of tailored heat indices, forecasting and operational requirements for providing impact-based advisories, and extreme heat risk communication from weather to climate timescales;

Outstanding knowledge and experience with multi-disciplinary research and operational partnerships in extreme temperatures and climate;

Experience in policy guidance to the executive management level, on strategy development and management of the implementation of overall strategies and policies and procedures;

Prior working experience with UN Agencies will be an added advantage.
Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.
