Introduction

Country: Lesotho

Description of the Assignment:

The Knowledge Management Consultant will lead the development and implementation of a communication and knowledge management strategy to enhance awareness, stakeholder engagement, and traditional knowledge documentation on ABS. This includes conducting a Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices, and Behavior (KAP/B) survey; organizing sensitization workshops on ABS and the Nagoya Protocol; and applying participatory approaches to document traditional knowledge on medicinal plants. The consultant will also produce knowledge products for policy and community use and provide recommendations to strengthen national ABS-related knowledge systems. This work by the Knowledge Management Consultant contributes significantly to the overall objective of the ABS project in Lesotho, โ€œto strengthen national and local capacities to implement the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS), with a focus on traditional knowledge on medicinalplants and the potential for bioprospectingโ€. Specifically, it advances the project in the following ways:

โ€ข Enhancing National and Local Understanding of ABS: By conducting KAP/B surveys and awareness workshops, the consultant will help raise baseline knowledge and understanding of ABS among key stakeholder groups, including traditional practitioners, herders, women, and local authorities. This fosters informed participation, crucial for the successful implementation of ABS frameworks.

โ€ข Promoting Inclusive and Equitable Participation: The use of gender-sensitive and participatory methods to document traditional knowledge ensures that Local Communities โ€” especially women, girls and eldersโ€”are meaningfully engaged. This supports the equity and inclusivity principles of the Nagoya Protocol and builds local ownership of ABS mechanisms.Strengthening Traditional Knowledge Systems: By systematically documenting and preserving traditional knowledge related to medicinal plants, the work supports legal recognition, cultural preservation, and sustainable use of biodiversity. This forms a key foundation for negotiating benefit-sharing agreements that are respectful of community rights. โ€ข Supporting Policy and Decision-Making: The production of evidence-based knowledge products (e.g., policy briefs and community summaries) will inform national decision-makers and support the development of ABS regulations, strategies, and education programs, thereby enhancing institutional capacity.

โ€ข Enabling Replication and Sustainability: The communication and knowledge management strategy will ensure effective dissemination and upscaling of successful practices, allowing other communities and sectors to replicate the approaches developed under the project, thus ensuring long-term impact and sustainability.

The consultantโ€™s work is foundational for building informed, inclusive, and culturally grounded ABS systems in Lesotho. It ensures that the voices of local knowledge holders are integrated into policy and benefit-sharing processes, while also helping the country institutionalize and scale up ABS implementation in alignment with the Nagoya Protocol.
