5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesThe Office of the UNHCR was established on 14 December 1950 by the UN General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country. During times of displacement, we provide critical emergency assistance in the form of clean water, sanitation and healthcare, as well as shelter, blankets, household goods and sometimes food. We also arrange transport and assistance packages for people who return home, and income-generating projects for those who resettle.

ContextThe influx of Sudanese refugees to Yida and Jamjang camps started in 2011 following the eruption of the armed conflict in Kordofan, Sudan. This led forced displacements, and many civilians flee their homes. This is in addition to the ongoing situation in Sudan. As a result, over 138,000 Sudanese refugees arrived Pariang County, Ruweng Administrative Area in South Sudan since 2012 and are settled in Yida settlement, Ajuong Thok and Pamir refugee camps in Jamjang. Living conditions and remarksThe incumbentโ€™s duty station, Jamjang is a Town located in Ruweng Administrative Area, Jamjang County in South Sudan. The weather condition varies between 22-40ยฐC, Wind NW at 10 km/h, 12% Humidity. Jamjang is classified as a non-family duty station with the hardship category โ€œEโ€, mainly due to its remoteness and low level of basic facilities. The security level is categorized as level 4 with the situation calm and stable. All security briefings are provided in Juba by the Senior Field Safety Officer upon arrival, and in Jamjang by Snr field safety Associate. Security clearance is required for all travel between Jamjang, entry points and Juba. However, the political environment in South Sudan is unpredictable, thus requires strong security awareness when in the field. There is no reliable commercial flight operating between Jamjang and the capital Juba. Travel between Juba and Jamjang is facilitated by UNHAS flight. There is also road transport to dispatch logistics where the road is bumpy. Security clearance is mandatory, via UNDSS web. There is level 1 clinic in UNHCR compound managed by IQARUS and Pariang Hospital, in Pariang county, which is 40Km NE of Jamjang. As Jamjang is designated R&R/ SCWS Duty Station, UNV is entitled to go for SCWS every 9 weeks (63 days) stay in the duty station. Accommodation is provided for National staff in the UNHCR guest house at a cost of $55 per month. Visitors, too, can be accommodated if room is available. South Sudan is a unique country and Jamjang is a unique (humanitarian) operation with increased refugee influx from Sudan. It provides for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. There are several refugees returns reception centers and entry points for UNHCR operational areas under UNHCR Sub Office Jamjang. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential.
