WASH and Hygiene Promotion Assistant
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), one of the worldโs leading NGOs, with a focus on responding to displacement, have been registered in Sudan since 2004, delivering life-saving programming in protection, emergency response, shelter, food security and livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, camp management, and humanitarian mine action. DRC has implemented projects in Central Darfur, South Kordofan, Gedaref, Port Sudan, and White Nile. Sudan hosts one of the largest displaced populations in Africa, with over 3.7 million internally displaced people and over 1.1 million refugees from South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Chad, Yemen and Syria. Against a background of political crisis, Sudan faces economic and social turmoil, with sharp increases in food and energy costs, further exacerbated by disease outbreaks and ongoing conflict.
POSITION PROFILE
Under the supervision of the WASH Team Leader, the WASH and Hygiene Assistant will be responsible for ensuring high quality and timely delivery of all the WASH-related Hygiene Promotion activities, will contribute to DRC Strategic objective of improving WASH to beneficiariesโ community through improving access to safe water and sanitation, and impacting good behavior change in hygiene practices in project area of implementations (Gadaref) To ensure the complementarity of WASH hardware and software components to address existing WASH needs in the targeted communities. The position will also support the WASH emergency preparedness and response activities in the project areas, including supporting organizing, and supervising volunteer teams, monitoring of water quality/chlorination processes, construction teams, assessment and design of appropriate interventions, and day-to-day project implementation supporting IDPs and host communities.
She/He will be responsible for the daily technical planning and providing training to community health volunteers (CHVs) , CHPs, and Hygiene / WaSH Committees in the catchment area, implementation, supervision, and monitoring of hygiene promotion activities, ensuring positive engagement of communities admitted into the program in hygiene awareness and knowledge about personal, water, food, and environmental hygiene.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Main Duties
Ensure that the hygiene promotion activities are implemented based on the WASH quality standards established by DRC and SHPERE. Daily monitoring and recording of field activities related to WASH-Hygiene promotion and tracking the project-planned activity progress daily. Weekly (or each time when necessary) brief written and oral reports to the line manager. Assist the MEAL team in monitoring and evaluation, and ensure project lessons are documented for future notes. Close cooperation with trained groups โ regular meetings and sessions, monitoring of WASH activities after the training, documenting activities conducted by trained groups. Communicate techniques on environmental, food, and water hygiene in the target households/ communities. Ensure that the various aspects of the hygiene activities are integrated with Protection, CCCM, EcRec, and Emergency teams. Cooperation with local authorities (SMoH, HAC) and local communities โ participation in meetings, reporting on meetings outcomes to the line manager. Facilitating appropriate community engagement in the design and delivery of essential WASH services and facilities โ carrying out community mobilization activities, liaising with crucial stakeholders. Mobilize and conduct community hygiene and sanitation campaigns, sessions, focus group discussions, and meetings with key informants. Arranging and sorting WASH IEC materials and ensuring proper usage โ liaising with Logistics, and communicating any possible shortages to the line manager. Providing support/carrying out WASH-NFI distributions โ organizing distribution according to line manager guidance & providing stock count for WASH NFIs, in coordination with CCCM, informing community about the rules during distribution as well as proper usage of items; handing over items to community; keeping record of recipients. Attending field-based WASH Cluster meetings upon request from the line manager. As required, support WASH in emergencies (flood response, public health outbreak) planning and response interventions. Work towards the achievement of overall goals through effective supervision of hygiene-related activities and lateral relations and teamwork. Planning, monitoring, and supervision of community health volunteersโ (CHVs) engaged in hygiene promotion activities, to ensure the quality of implementation. Capacity building of community hygiene volunteers and monitoring to ensure the quality of deliverable activities.Program - Infrastructure
Supporting as part of the team in the assessment, design, Bill of Quantities (BoQ) preparations, setup, planning, and implementation of all the WASH projects. Supporting & following up the water chlorination and water testing at the water points and household levels, including the water chlorination/testing database, making it available for review by the WASH officer/ Infrastructure. Daily update and management of data-gathering and tracking tools used to monitor the project. Ensure the DRC Code of Conduct is understood, acknowledged in writing, and followed by the project staff and all volunteer labor, and infractions are reported in an appropriate and timely manner.Reporting/communication
Keep files and monitoring archived at the DRC offices accessible to the line manager. Participate in seminars and training workshops useful to the accomplishment of sensitization activities and the attainment of project objectives. Report to the line manager on the evolution of activities and specific tasks assigned, problems encountered, quality of relations with beneficiaries, and the involvement of communities. Remain in touch with the population and local authorities to understand needs, complaints, and major events that may have an impact on the activities of DRC, and in terms of operational perceptions. Share any information or difficulties related to DRC activities or accessibility that might be hindering the delivery of the activities. Coordinate and collaborate with S-MoH departments, local authorities, communities, and all other secondary stakeholders.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES
Preferred a university degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Water /Civil Engineering, or another related technical subject is desirable. Minimum 1 - 2 yearsโ relevant experience within a humanitarian organization in Public health, Hygiene Promotion, Community Mobilization, Engineering, or WASH. Good knowledge of the Hygiene Promotion Activities, supervising the implementation of WASH, and Sanitation approaches (CLTS, PHAST, SBCC, and CHAST methodology) Good experience of working directly with Local communities, IDPs, and Refugee communities. Understands the mainstreaming of gender, disability inclusion, and accountability to affected populations mechanisms in WASH programming Good communication skills; experience with dealing with Communities; good written and spoken English and Arabic. Computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic report-writing ability.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
At least high school degree, university degree is preferred in the areas of; Public Health, Environmental Health, Water /Civil Engineering, Project Management, Public Administration or other related subject
