Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, and peace and security. 

Reporting to the Head of the Communications, the Communications Associate supports the formulation and implementation of the communications and advocacy strategies to increase the outreach, standing, and awareness of UN Women with partners, the media, and the public in line with corporate communications policies and initiatives. The Communications Associate adopts a quality and client-oriented approach to deliver results and also support activities and special events organized by UN Women.

Scope of Work:

Provide coordination support in NCO’s communication planning, campaign coordination, and digital content development:

Provide substantive inputs to the development of the NCO’s advocacy and communication strategy.  Provide support to advocacy efforts and campaigns by conceptualizing and developing campaign frameworks with clear objectives, key messages, audiences, and timelines.   Coordinate implementation of campaign activities, ensuring strong digital amplification and cross-platform integration for UN Women/UN system observances and thematic campaigns such as International Women’s Day, 16 Days of Activism, women’s political participation, women’s economic empowerment, and the care economy etc. Develop social media content and digital assets (graphics, copy, reels, animations, short videos, etc.) aligned with campaign and programmatic priorities, requiring proficiency in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite tools, including Premiere Pro, Illustrator, and InDesign or other software with equivalent capabilities.  Provide or coordinate the development of campaign narratives, programme briefs, briefs to capture the results of NCO, and other advocacy materials that support UN Women’s communication objectives.  Develop and maintain weekly digital content calendars for effective planning and implementation of the social media posting plan.  Provide guidance and support to programme and other NCO’s staff on UN Women corporate communications guidelines and printing norms to ensure it complies with corporate branding, accessibility standards, and visibility guidelines from HQ and RO.   Provide support to translate, adapt, and redesign NCO’s materials for broader reach.  Provide analysis and insights to social media trends, platform performance, and audience engagement; track campaign progress and prepare analytics reports, updates, and end-line summaries with recommendations. 

Provide substantive support to manage and expand the NCO’s web, media, and social media/digital presence

Identify stories and achievements within the NCO and develop/review content for the NCO’s website hosted at the RO and social media channels including for the publications. Maintain and regularly update the NCO website content in accordance with corporate requirements in coordination with the Communications Officer.   Prepare press releases, articles, key messages, and other advocacy materials and support for roundtable discussions, press conferences, and other publicity events, and prepare briefing materials and press releases.  Manage NCO social media platforms, ensuring strategic scheduling, timely engagement, and adherence to corporate social media policy. Upload stories, resources, and campaign materials to internal knowledge management systems and external platforms.  Introduce and test innovative digital formats to enhance reach, engagement, and audience diversity.  Provide support to the Communication Officer to liaise with media to establish and maintain relationships with them; maintain and update database of relevant media and media person, as necessary;  Respond to requests for information and arrange interviews; and Draft talking points.  Maintain library/ database of reference materials and photos, and digital assets, as necessary; Provide support on special web/digital/media projects undertaken by the NCO.  Research, compile, and produce reports on web statistics regularly and electronic surveys.   Maintain files, databases, and systems relevant to the NCO’s digital presence, as necessary; and Follow guidelines from RO/HQ.

Facilitate knowledge management, building, sharing, and digital learning:

Contribute to the identification of best practices and lessons learned.  Support to conduct trainings and workshops on communication practices, digital communication, campaign planning, and social media innovation.  Maintain a structured repository of communication materials, campaign assets, templates, and multimedia resources; regularly upload photos to Flickr.  Provide inputs to quarterly and annual reporting, including communications metrics, campaign summaries, and digital outreach analysis.  Provide/ exchange information with HQ and RO, NCO, and COs. 

Maintain and Coordinate Communications Consultants:

Support the coordination and management of communications consultants, including work planning, deliverable tracking, and timeline monitoring.  Review consultants’ outputs for quality, alignment with UN Women standards, and timely delivery, in coordination with the Communications Officer.  Support administrative processes related to consultants, including onboarding, contract follow-up, and coordination with program support team members.  Track consultants’ time and deliverables and ensure certification of satisfactory completion to facilitate timely payments, in line with UN Women procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Certification: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in communications, journalism, or a relevant field is required. 

Experience At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in providing support to the formulation and implementation of internal and external communications and advocacy strategies and related plans is required.

Experience in the use of social media, basic video recording/editing, graphic designing and digital communications is required.   Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and spreadsheet and database packages, experience in handling of web-based management systems is required. Experience in the use of a modern web-based ERP System, preferably Oracle Cloud, is desirable.

Languages 

Fluency in English is required. Fluency in [Nepali] is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable (French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
