Result of ServiceThe results of this consultancy contribute to the implementation of priority projects identified in the Climate Action Plans for Building and Construction for Senegal, Bangladesh, and Ghana under the project \"Transforming the Built Environment through Sustainable Materials\". The project is a partnership with UNEP and the GlobalABC seeking to promote sustainability in the building and construction sector. The consultant will support the LHSS to strengthen and implement its project portfolio on sustainable buildings for affordable housing Work LocationHome based Expected duration5 Months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBACKGROUND ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities, providing adequate and affordable housing for all. It works with organisations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society, and the private sector, to help build, manage, plan, and finance sustainable urban development. UN-Habitat, through its Land Housing and Shelter section, supports New Urban Agenda partners and governments at all levels in formulating and implementing progressive housing sector reforms, policies, programs, and legislation that contribute to the creation of inclusive and sustainable cities and comply with international law relating to the right to adequate housing. It provides expertise to support the sound analysis of the housing sector, and in particular, the review of key legislation and elements that affect affordable housing provisions. UN-Habitat assists governments in formulating and implementing policies and strategies designed to maximize the impact of housing on national socio-economic development, employment generation, and sustainable urban development. It facilitates in-depth local diagnosis of the housing sector's state. It provides technical support for the formulation of sustainable policies and programs related to the housing and construction sector, as well as subsequent implementation strategies. The Land Housing and Shelter Section carries a portfolio of work on sustainable housing and construction that aims at contributing to the realisation of the right to adequate housing and SDG 11.1, as well as to accelerate the shift into more sustainable, resource efficient, and circular economy-based housing initiatives, programmes, and projects. The portfolio of work relates to various activities related to sustainable buildings and construction, it includes the RE-Think Buildings Programme which is led by UN-Habitatยดs Land Housing and Shelter Section, in partnership with UNEP, the One Planet Network, and UNOPS. RESPONSIBILITIES Under the supervision of the Chief, Land Housing and Shelter Section, and together with the RE-Think Buildings Programme team and the relevant country offices, the consultant will carry out the following responsibilities: โ€ข Review and provide technical inputs to draft Green Building Certification and guidelines, and provide a synopsis of the research for Bangladesh and Senegal โ€ข Develop a concept for capacity building on the use of local building materials in Ghana to decarbonize the housing and construction sector โ€ข Contribute to formulating a discussion paper on Sustainable Housing in preparation for the inter-sessional meeting for the Open-Ended Working Group on Adequate Housing โ€ข Adapt Climate Action Roadmaps and Circularity Assessment to country requirements for implementation by UN-Habitat country teams โ€ข In consultation with the LHS team and UN-Habitat Regional Offices, draft three (3) concept notes outlining potential projects and initiatives to advance the implementation of key actions identified in the Climate Action Roadmaps for Buildings and Construction in Bangladesh, Ghana, and Senegal. Qualifications/special skillsAn advanced university degree (masterโ€™s or similar) in engineering, architecture, material science, environment-related science, economics, urban management, or other fields related to housing construction and sustainable urban development is required. Minimum 4 years of relevant professional experience, including project drafting and coordinating the implementation of projects is required. Experience in writing analytical texts relating to green buildings, construction materials, housing issues, and urban development issues is desirable. LanguagesFluency in English is required.
