Operating under mandates from both the UN General Assembly and Security Council, UNMAS functions as a specialized service within the Department of Peace Operations (DPO).. UNMAS Sudan
The UNMAS Sudan Programme, based in Port Sudan, works in close coordination with the National Mine Action Authority (NMAA), the UN Country Team and humanitarian partners. The project aims to protect civilians from the threat of explosive ordnance (EO) and strengthen the resilience of conflict-affected communities through a comprehensive, gender-mainstreamed and conflict-sensitive mine action response. It also supports broader humanitarian, early recovery and stabilization efforts by enabling safe access to areas contaminated by EO.
UNMAS Sudanโs key activities include land release operations; delivery of both direct and indirect Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE), tailored to different gender and age groups; and provision of technical advice to humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding (HDP) actors to help them safely operate in EO-affected environments. The project also leads the coordination of the Mine Action Area of Responsibility (MA AoR) in Sudan, co-chairing the sector under the Global Protection Cluster framework. Through this role, UNMAS ensures that mine action is effectively integrated into humanitarian coordination mechanisms and that EO threats are adequately understood and addressed at all levels.
In addition, the project plans to strengthen its engagement in Victim Assistance (VA), particularly in support of EO survivors - an area that has seen limited attention since the onset of the current conflict. This includes efforts to reactivate the VA pillar within the MA AoR and improve coordination, referral pathways and advocacy for services and support to victims.
While the Programmeโs current operational footprint is primarily focused on areas under the control of the Sudan Government - especially urban areas in Khartoum and Al Jazirah - UNMAS Sudan aspires to expand its outreach to all EO-affected regions, addressing both legacy contamination and new threats emerging from the ongoing conflict.
Functional ResponsibilitiesUnder the overall supervision of the Senior Support Services Associate, the Senior Driver/Mechanic will conduct the following duties:
Driving Responsibilities:
Ensure provision of reliable and safe driving services by
a) driving office vehicles for the transport of authorised personnel, including the deployment to the field locations, and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items, proper storage and
b) meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport.
Ensure proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, trouble-shooting and arrangements for major repairs, oil changes, tire checks, brake maintenance, and keeping the vehicle clean.
Maintain accurate records of trips, mileage, and fuel consumption.
Ensure the availability of all required documents and supplies, including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, waiver forms, office directory, city/country maps, first aid kit, fuel logs, and necessary spare parts.
Take immediate actions as per rules and regulations in case of involvement in accidents.
Handle office documents for protocol clearance and supports clerical work as assigned.
Collect and deliver documents to and from relevant UN and Government organizations, including expediting staff visa and customs formalities when necessary.
Mechanical Responsibilities:
Support with the market research by collecting quotations and documents from suppliers when needed.
Conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance tasks on programme vehicles and generators to ensure their proper functioning and safety.
Perform scheduled servicing, such as oil changes, filter replacements, and cleaning, and troubleshoot minor mechanical issues.
Maintain accurate maintenance records and report any major repairs or spare parts requirements to the supervisor for further action.
Education:
Secondary School Diploma with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience
Experience:
Relevant experience is defined as experience working as a driver of a civilian vehicle for an organization or institution and experience in vehicle and/or generator maintenance.
Minimum 3 years of work experience as a driver with a safe driving record is required
Minimum one (1) year experience in minor vehicle repair and maintenance is required.
A valid local driver's license is required
A valid Sudanese driving license (General type) is desired.
Experience in driving both manual and automatic transmission vehicles is required.
Experience and knowledge of local driving rules and regulations is required.
Experience of driving armored vehicles is desired.
Experience working with NGO and or UN is desired.
Languages:
Fluency in Arabic (read, write and speak) is required.
