Work LocationHome based Expected durationThrough 5 May 2026 Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. As a global leader in security risk management principles, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in the most complex and challenging environments, while maximizing precious resources. To this end, the work of the Department is aligned under a clear mission, to enable United Nations system programme activities through trusted security leadership and solutions. Gender equality and inclusivity are essential for UNDSS' operational success, as they are key to providing tailored gender solutions and effective security leadership. Incorporating these principles into the Departmentโ€™s practices ensures that security services meet the diverse needs of personnel and operations. Within UNDSS, the Gender and Inclusivity Unit (GIU) coordinates and advances the integration of gender equality and inclusivity across security operations through comprehensive gender responsive security and the development of practical gender tools and solutions. The GIU is looking to recruit three specialized consultants (one senior and two junior) to strengthen the inclusion of gender considerations in its field operations in the Indo-Pacific (Myanmar/Thailand/Afghanistan) and Middle East (Lebanon/Syria) regions. Under the general direction of the Gender and Inclusivity Coordinator, the senior consultant, working as a team with the junior consultants, will be responsible for the following duties: ยท Lead efforts to address gaps in the integration of gender and inclusivity within security operations, by developing or enhancing gender-responsive products, tools and mechanisms in line with UNDSS Gender Strategy 2024-2028; ยท Ensure the integration of gender sensitive approaches into existing security operations and processes, monitor progress, refine approaches and address new challenges; ยท Develop and deliver context specific, culturally sensitive trainings and briefing modules on gender equality and inclusivity to equip field personnel with knowledge and skills to implement gender sensitive strategies; ยท Identify and update key stakeholders on emerging needs and challenges that will enable tailored support and provide valuable insights for strategic implementation of UNDSS gender and inclusivity goals within security programme / operations; ยท Lead field missions and provide expert technical support, carry out data analysis and draft related reports; ยท Plan, lead and facilitate workshops and interactive sessions, ensuring actionable outcomes are implemented; ยท Lead the preparation of substantive high quality written outputs, including analysis, reports and presentations related the assignment; ยท Represent the Gender and Inclusion Unit in relevant meetings, promoting best practices and lessons learned. Qualifications/special skillsAdvanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in public administration, gender studies, international relations, law, human rights, human resources management, social sciences or a related field. Professionalism: Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts, and approaches relevant to gender equality, diversity, and inclusion. Ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems. Ability to conduct data collection using various methods. Conceptual, analytical, and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis. Ability to apply judgment, plan work, and manage conflicting priorities. Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be โ€œclientsโ€ and seeks to see things from clientsโ€™ point of view; establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect; identifies clientsโ€™ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions; monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clientsโ€™ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems; keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects; meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client. A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience developing and designing gender related solutions within project or programmes of high complexity is required. Previous experience working on gender, diversity and inclusion-related projects or programmes within the United Nations or similar International Organizations or the public sector at an international level is highly desirable. Experience in data analytics and visualization to support the design of gender and inclusion outreach initiatives is desirable. Knowledge or understanding of the UNSMS or UNDSS field operations is also desirable. Background in training or security highly desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the posting advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
