Background
The United Nations Organizations in Tanzania seek to recruit suitably qualified nationals for the position of Security Operations Center Assistants (5 posts). The SOC Assistants work in close collaboration with the UNDSS Associate/ Security Officer (A/SCO) or Field Security Associate (FSA) and other UN personnel (especially Security Wardens) in providing support on telecommunications related issues.ย
A Security Operations Centre (SOC) is a cost-shared resource, established to support the safety and security of personnel, premises, assets and operations working for various organizations covered by the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS). The SOC monitors, facilitates and coordinates the communications of data and voice messages using the security communications system (SCS), within one or more operational areas. Additionally, responsibilities can include maintaining administrative data supporting security communications, such as aggregating contact data for UNSMS personnel, offices, vehicles and emergency services.
This position as SOC Assistant will be supporting key functions and operations of the United Nations which can be challenging and unpredictable as they may be required to respond to and assist callers in need of immediate assistance. They will have the responsibility to pass on key information and instructions in a timely and calm manner to UNSMS personnel and others, as required. At times, the work will be fast-paced and intense but highly rewarding as the SOC Assistant will be part of a response and support team which contributes to the work of the United Nations. The selected candidate will gain valuable experience and skills while working with people from a broad range of cultures and professional backgrounds.
As such, they will broadcast security related information originated from either the Security Adviser for Tanzania or in his/her absence the A/SCO/FSA in/Dar es Salam which could affect operations; keep track of all UN vehicle movements; when required, records, individual movements; conduct radio checks with UN staff as required and more specifically with Wardens and Deputy Wardens.ย
Duties and Responsibilities
1.ย Provide telecommunications services, focusing on the achievement of the following results:ย
Transmits and receives messages through VHF and HF radio, telephone, satellite, bulk SMS selecting the most efficient and economic means for the transmission, taking into consideration the nature and priority of communications to be transmitted.ย Conduct Emergency Security Communications checks with UN personnel and wardens.ย Undertakes personnel headcount in accordance with instructions from the Senior Security Professional, or an established SOP in a timely and accurate manner. Maintains a station log where all occurrences related to the security operations of the UN System are entered. Information about every movement of UN Security Management System (UNSMS) personnel and UN vehicles in the field is also entered in the log.ย Notifies of the respective UNSMS organization or NGOs security focal points when their personnel are involved in a security or safety incident. Monitors the usage of the SCS and ensures it is used according to established SOPs, guide personnel on appropriate behaviour when using the SCS Ensure that no unauthorized communications are exchanged on the network. Be flexible to replace colleagues while on leave within and outside duty station Carry out any other related security functions assigned by A/SCO/FSA2.ย Provide Telecommunications support and advice, focusing on the achievement of the following results:ย
In coordination with the Security Adviser/A/SCO/FSA transmits security related information to update UNSMS personnel in the respective areas on the development of the current security/emergency in the areas where they are operating.ย3.ย Keeping Telecommunications Equipment Operational, focusing on the achievement on the following results:ย
Ensure that all the equipment placed under his/her responsibility is in good working condition, make simple repairs, and/or arranges promptly for repairs or replacement of equipment.ย Maintains inventory, keeping accurate and regularly updated records of telecommunications equipment and its location, and ensuring stock is maintained at the level to meet needs.ย4.ย Providing efficient support to users, focusing on the achievement of the following resultsย
Assists and trains UNSMS personnel in the acquisition and operation of telecommunications/VHF and HF radio Equipment.ย Assists with programming of telecommunications equipment for all UN Agencies.ย Conduct communication training and briefings to staff, increasing their communication and/or telecommunication awareness and ability to operate more efficiently.5. Issue/renew Identification Cards for UNSMS personnel according to respective AFPs requestย
Ensure ID card and Premises Access cards are issued according to AFPs request.ย ย ย ย Maintain and keep stock of ID cards and equipment and request replacements at least three months in advance.ย6. Manually approved Security Clearances in TRIP as directed by SA/A/SCO/FSA:
Monitor all staff movements by tracking missions in accordance with Security Adviser forTanzania or in his absence the FSA/Dar es Salam directions. Log every event in the designed formats. Report all incidents immediately to the duty officer and A/SCO/FSA. Record and track UN vehicles and movements of UNSMS personnel during missions7.ย Monitor open sources (TV, internet, newspapers, radio) compile and share daily reports of the most significant incidents occurring throughout the country with the security team.ย

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
Bachelor university degree in Telecommunications and/or related disciplines (computer science, engineering) is desirable but not a requirement or another relevant field is required OR Secondary Education level in the areas mentioned above in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the bachelor university degree.Experience:ย
Applicants with Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study are required to have a minimum of one (1) year of professionsl work experience. Applicants with secondary education level are required to have aminimum of four (4) years of relevant professional experience in Telecommunications and/or related disciplines (computer science, engineering).Required Skills:
