Established in 1994, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management. The Convention seeks to support countries in addressing Desertification, Land Degradation, and Drought.(www.unccd.int) The G20 (or Group of Twenty) is the annual international forum for the governments of 19 industrialized countries and the European Union. The G20 Leaders' Declaration, issued on Sunday, 22 November 2020, launched a \"Global Initiative on Reducing Land Degradation and Enhancing Conservation of Terrestrial Habitats\". Building on existing initiatives and on a voluntary basis, the G20 countries share the ambition to achieve a 50 percent reduction in the amount of degraded land by 2040. The G20 Global Land Initiative (G20 GLI) focuses on building capacity, engaging the private sector, empowering civil society and showcasing success. Engaging with all stakeholders in land restoration efforts is crucial to promote inclusivity and sustainability as well as the ownership and empowerment of local communities and stakeholders, who can bring unique perspectives, knowledge, resources and solutions to the table and ensure their needs and rights are respected and accounted for in the process. Needs Assessment 1. There are number of upcoming events in 2025 where GLI will need to have significant presence which will need to be planned and coordinated both internally and with external service providers, and reports prepared in a timely fashion. 2. There is an ongoing need for coordinating research work to support the activities of the Global Land Initiative 3. There is need to coordinate the follow up on the recommendations of the steering committee 4. Supporting liaison and communications between internal and external teams in ensuring event logistics are carried out efficiently. The events coordinator will work closely with the G20 GLI Director and the Communications Coordinator for the respective deliverables. Duties and Responsibilities: 1.Conduct a quarterly review of the follow up actions from the Steering Committee and prepare updates for the steering committee, in consultation with the Director 2.Conduct regular internet based research on emerging topics as directed by the Director as to facilitate proactive engagement 3.Prepare engagement plans for various events, including Ramsar Convention, SER 2025, CoP30 of UN Climate Change, CRIC of UNCCD and UNEA 7, in consultation with the communication team and Director 4.Support the communications team in liaising and organizing the events, including meeting logistics with external service providers and partners as well as information sharing and follow-up with the staff team 5.Keep track of progress in each of the project timelines for each event and bring to the attention of the communications coordinator any delays for timely action 6.Prepare related event reports including, using data, with robust analyses of the results, lessons learned and best practice to improve future results. Qualifications/special skillsA Masters degree in Arts, Science, Law, Engineering or other related fields is required. Specific experience in event planning as the core of the work will be on event planning for major events where G20 GLI will be participating. Experience in coordinating between technical, logistics and communication team for event management is required. Experience in internet based research and documentation is required. LanguagesFor this position, fluency in English language (both oral and written) is required.
