Work LocationMontreal or remotely Expected durationsix (6) months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by UNEP. This internship is located at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, under the overall supervision of the Senior Programme Management Unit of the ABS Unit and the direct supervision of the DSI Programme Management Officer. Collaboration is expected with other interns, the Cali Fund Communications Strategy consultant, the Access and Benefit-Sharing Unit, the Communications Unit, the Office of the Executive Secretary, and Cali Fund UN partners. The internship has a start date of early March 2026 for a duration of six (6) months. The Internship is for a maximum duration of 6 months and UNPAID. The intern will assist in the promotion of the Cali Fund to various stakeholders, including the general public, through the creation/maintenance of the Cali Fund's social media channels. The intern will be expected to develop social media content for platforms such as LinkedIn, X and Instagram, including video materials, storytelling, etc. The Intern will also work on the Cali Fund website, ensuring the website keeps developing, and remains updated. Other communication items might be requested, as needed. Under the direct supervision of the DSI Programme Management Officer and in coordination with the Cali Fund Communications Consultant, other interns, the IT and the communication Units, the intern will: (inter alia) • Assist with the maintenance of social media accounts for the Cali Fund such as LinkedIn, X, and Instagram; • Assist with the maintenance of the Cali Fund website; • Use Canva to develop, maintain and update Cali Fund guides, as needed; • Create additional communication products relating to the multilateral mechanism on digital sequence information on genetic resources and the Cali Fund through research, and drafting of language; • Support the implementation of the strategy for work related to DSI and the Cali Fund, under the guidance of the Programme Management Officer and UN collaborators: • Work with the communications unit to promote existing communications materials (videos, infographics etc.) on DSI, and the creation of new communications collaterals such as videos for storytelling; • Work on translations with the assistance of staff and translation tools; • Monitor the success of social media posts based on analytics, and keep up to date on new social media tools and best practices; • Participate in meetings both internally and with other UN entities on the communication strategy, guidance and review for the Cali Fund; • Support the organization and preparation of meetings, virtual or other, organized by the ABS Unit for work related to DSI, MLM and the Cali Fund, including logistical support and notetaking; • Assist in other duties as may be requested, including by the Executive Secretary. Any social media content, website updates, or external-facing communications prepared by the intern are subject to prior review and clearance by the supervisor and/or the Communications Unit. The intern will not independently engage with media or external stakeholders, and will only disseminate information that has been approved and made public. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor 's level or equivalent). (c) Have graduated with a university degree. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Arabic, French, Mandarin, and Spanish is desirable. NOTE: \"Fluency equals a rating of \"fluent\" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and \"Knowledge of\" equals a rating of \"confident\" in two of the four areas.
