Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the front office of the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA). The Office of the Special Adviser on Africa is responsible for providing integrated advice, promoting coherence, monitoring the implementation of commitments and coordinating global advocacy in support of Africa's development. The incumbent will be under the direct supervision of the Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa. More information on OSAA is available at https: //www.un.org/osaa/ ResponsibilitiesUnder the direct supervision of the Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: โข Assist in the strategic and annual reviews of the implementation of the recommendations on the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa by: -Providing substantive support to the intergovernmental process entrusted with the final review of the strategic review of persistent causes of conflict in Africa -Drafting substantive reports and papers for consideration of stakeholders as part of the comprehensive and annual review processes. โข Assist in the implementation of the recommendations contained in the 1998 Secretary-Generalโs report on the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and development by following up and taking note of the deliberations of the Security Council on conflict prevention in Africa, regional cooperation in support of conflict prevention including mediation support and the cross-cutting issues including prevention of violence against women and children in conflict situations and preparing the reports of the Secretary-General for the General Assembly. โข Advise the Special Adviser on Africa on policy options in the areas of focus entrusted to the incumbent and to organize workshops, panels and ad hoc expert group meetings in the areas of conflict prevention, strengthening the conditions for peace and post-conflict challenges. โข Support advocacy efforts of the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa in support of Africaโs peace and development issues. โข Represent the Special Adviser at meetings and consultations on areas of focus entrusted to the incumbent, undertake missions and participate in meetings organized by Member States and organizations of the UN system. โข Establish effective cooperation and relationship with Member states, relevant organizations of the UN system, other intergovernmental organizations, regional and subregional organizations on the African continent and non-governmental organizations in the areas entrusted to him/her. EducationAdvanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in economics, business administration, management or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Work ExperienceA minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required. Experience in Africa's development is required. Experience in intergovernmental processes is required. Experience assisting a head of entity with formulating development strategies, focusing on areas like development financing, industrialization, energy, and social protection is required. Experience drafting and reviewing complex data and evidence-based reports, communications and presentations on Africaโs development is required. Experience in AUDA-NEPAD (African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for Africa's Development) programme is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required.
