UNOPS Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office is recruiting for Programme Management Interns, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Established in 2009, the Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office (HAMCO) sub-region currently consists of an established Operation Centre in Addis Ababa which manages a portfolio of engagements in four (4) Horn of Africa countries (Ethiopia, Djibouti, Sudan and South Sudan). HAMCO focuses on Infrastructure, Procurement, Project Management, HR and Transactional Services, and Fund Management services across a wide range of sectors including Health, Education, Agriculture, Resilient infrastructure, among others.
The purpose of this Internship program is to provide opportunities for young graduates to acquire knowledge and experience and pave the way for their professional growth and career development. Specifically, the Programme Management interns will be responsible for the following tasks under the close supervision and guidance of the Senior Programme Manager.
Functional ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Senior Programme Manager, the Programme Management Intern will have the opportunity to support and gain hands-on experience in various aspects of infrastructure projects, including technical documentation, site inspections, and project coordination.
Support the preparation of technical drawings, bills of quantities (BoQs), and engineering reports. Assist in site inspections, monitoring construction activities, and documenting progress. Help ensure compliance with quality standards, safety protocols, and technical specifications. Support the review of contractor submissions, including shop drawings and material samples. Assist with data collection, analysis, and technical assessments for project planning. Prepare meeting minutes, field reports, and photographic documentation. Provide general administrative and logistical support to the Infra teams, as needed. Assists in conducting site assessments. Follow-up compliance towards HSSE requirements. Carry out any other tasks assigned by the supervisor to support the Infra Unit. Technical tasks:
Assist the technical team by providing support in preparing project documentation and reviewing scheduling information under guidance. Support the review process of technical documents to help check for completeness and alignment with quality standards. Assist in tracking tasks or progress related to project deliverables to support the timely completion of outputs by the team. Assist in producing bills of quantities of the proposed works. Observe and provide support during construction site visits, under the supervision of the senior project manager. Assist in preparing daily site logs and health & safety logs. Support documentation activities during site inspections conducted by engineers, and assist in recording observations at key project milestones. Support quality control documentation efforts by recording observations during quality check activities led by qualified personnel.. Assist in the preparation of updates and progress reports including images and videos as required. Help track project activities against planned timelines and flag observations to the supervisor for review. Assist in coordinating the team effort to complete any task as would be required and appropriate, if assigned.
Training components and learning elements
The intern will be exposed to practical learning with the supervision of a senior personnel within the Infra Unit.
Participation in missions or training courses
The intern will take online courses available in the intranet and attend workshops related to the infrastructure field.
Education/Experience/Language requirementsEducation
To qualify, the candidate should be currently enrolled in a university degree or have graduated from a university degree within the last 3 years at the time of the application. Preferably the candidate is studying or have studied one of the following subjects: Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental/Natural Science, Occupational Health or any other related fields
Work Experience Applicants are not required to have professional work experience.
Skills
Knowledge in Architecture and Engineering design software such as AutoCAD is an added advantage.Language
Fluency in written, reading and oral English is required. This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.
Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.

For staff positions only, UNOPS reserves the right to appoint a candidate at a lower level than the advertised level of the post.
For retainer contracts, you must complete a few mandatory courses ( they take around 4 hours to complete) in your own time, before providing services to UNOPS. Refreshers or new mandatory courses may be required during your contract. Please note that you will not receive any compensation for taking courses and refreshers.
