Mission and objectivesUN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing womenโs rights at the center of its efforts, UN Women is mandated to lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming are translated into action. It is also mandated to provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member Statesโ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. In line with the Tanzaniaโs national priorities, UN Womenโs strategic Plan 2022-2026 lays out the agencyโs unique role and comparative advantage in supporting national stakeholders in advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women by strengthening womenโs leadership and participation in political and governance systems, gender statistics, implementation of global gender norms and standards, ending violence against women and girls, and womenโs economic empowerment.
ContextBased at UNWOMEN Country Office in Dar es Salaam, the International UN University Volunteer - Programme Associate will have dual reporting: direct reporting to the Women Leadership and Economic Rights (WLER) Project Programme Manager and second level reporting to the Programme Analyst. She will provide programme support to the effective management of UN Women programmes at the Local Levels in Tanzania, including in the Mtwara sub-office by contributing in the programme design, formulation, implementation, and evaluation. The IUNV University Volunteer - Programme Associate will provide strategic support to evidence-based planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of the interventions undertaken by projects.
Task DescriptionUnder the direct supervision of the WLER Project Manager and second level reporting to the Programme Analyst, the International UN University Volunteer - Programme Associate will undertake the following tasks: 1. Assist in providing technical support to the implementation and management of programmes at Local Levels in Tanzania โข Assist in providing inputs to the annual workplan and budget as required โข Support coordination, monitoring and implementation of programme activities โข Assist in coordinating calls/request for proposals, including organization of technical review committees, and capacity assessment of partners โข Assist in reviewing and coordination of submission of both financial and narrative reports from the implementing partners โข Assist in training partners on Results Based Management 2. Assist in providing technical inputs to the monitoring and reporting of the programme/ project โข Support in monitoring progress on programme implementation and tracking results โข Assist in providing inputs to quarterly reports, donor reports and other reports on outputs, results and outcomes 3. Contribute to building partnerships, coordination and resource mobilization strategies โข Contribute to providing inputs to resource mobilization strategies, analysis and maintenance of information and databases โข Provide support in coordinating meetings and key programme events, including the preparation of background documents and dissemination of relevant minutes and notes to support follow-up actions โข Assist in coordinating relationships with implementing partners to support the programme implementation, and coordinate needs assessment exercises for partnersโ capacity building 4. Living conditions and remarksTanzania has an area of 947,300 sq km and is located in eastern Africa on the Indian Ocean. It shares its longest borders with Kenya (to the northeast) and Mozambique (to the southeast), but also borders Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia. To the east, Tanzania is bordered by the Indian Ocean. Three of Africaโs largest lakes also border sections of the country: Lake Victoria in the north, Lake Tanganyika in the west, and Lake Nyasa in the southwest. The International UN University Volunteer will be based in Dar es Salaam and will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. Dar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania, as the major port and economic center. Embassies and UN Offices are currently based in this city. Dar es Salaam is situated on the coast, overlooking the Indian Ocean. It is an International multicultural city with a mix of religions. There is a wide range of facilities available, including numerous shop-ping canters, movie theatres, restaurants and many new developments. The living conditions in Dar es Salaam are comfortable although pricy in certain neighbourhoods. The city contains high concentrations of trade and other services, and manufacturing compared to other parts of the country, which has about 80 percent of its population in rural areas. Downtown includes many small businesses, many of which are run by traders and proprietors whose families originated from the Middle East and Indian sub-continentโareas of the world with which the settlements of the Tanzanian coast have had long-standing trading relations. Tanzania is one of the most diverse countries in Africa. On the mainland, around 99% of the population is ethnically African, coming from over 120 different tribes, almost all of them Ban-tu. On Zanzibar, the people are of Arab, African, or mixed Arab and African descent. Kiswahili (Swahili) and English are both official languages. Kiswahili is the lingua franca of central and eastern Africa and the countryโs unifying language. Most people living in Tanzania speak one of the 158 local languages as their first language. Arabic is widely spoken in Zanzibar. English is the primary language of business, government administration, and higher education.
