Org. Setting and ReportingThe post is located in the Front Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Office. The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) serves as a center of excellence for peace operations, responsible for preventing, responding to and managing conflict and sustaining peace in countries where peace operations under its purview are deployed, and provides support to other entities on peace and security issues. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority and under the supervision of the Chief of Office, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: โข Monitors and analyses, in consultation with the appropriate regional divisions, developments in designated peacekeeping operations as well as other thematic topics, through incoming and outgoing cables, correspondence, reports, media, and other documents. โข Serves as Front Office point of contact for the operational and cross-cutting areas assigned; brings issues of importance to the attention of the Under-Secretary-General and the Chief of Office and proposes action. โข Provides support in coordinating, drafting and reviewing United Nations reports, speeches and other documents on peacekeeping, as required. โข Reviews correspondence for the Under-Secretary-General's attention and ensures quality control. โข Attends and prepares notes on the Under-Secretary-General's meetings and assists with follow-up action, as required. โข Prepares substantive and organizational aspects of the Under-Secretary-General's travel and accompanies the Under-Secretary-General, as required. โข Facilitates the coordination and liaison within DPKO and with other parts of the United Nations system on political, policy and operational issues on peacekeeping. โข Coordinates inputs, compiles and prepares briefing notes/talking points/background materials for the Secretary-General, the Deputy Secretary-General and the Chef de Cabinet. โข Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press. โข Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the countries and thematic mandates for which the staff member is responsible. โข Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat. โข Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice to field mission/UN agencies active on the ground. โข Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the office, branch or unit. โข Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters. โข Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations. โข Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to potential disputes and conflicts involving assigned countries or region. โข Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility. โข Participates in provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions. โข Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization's purview. โข Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. โข Performs other related duties as required. Previous experience in a Front Office setting is desirable. Knowledge of peace operations in Africa is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
