1. Objective of the assignment
The IP Analytics Section in the IP for Innovators Department is responsible for developing WIPOโs leadership role in using IP analytics to help Member States develop their IP and innovation ecosystems to drive economic growth and to support researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs. The Section has several important work plan activities to deliver in 2025, including:
i. Preparing multiple patent landscape reports (PLRs);
ii. Expanding the WIPO Patent Analytics Community of Practice;
iii. Researching, planning and selecting the theme for the fourth edition of the biennial WIPO Technology Trends flagship publication; and
iv. Delivering patent analytics training workshops to Member States, with several national and regional seminars planned this year.
A patent analytics Consultant is required for parental leave cover in order to ensure the successful delivery of these work plan activities and to balance resources across the team.
2. Deliverables/services
In the course of this assignment, the Consultant will be required to:
(a) Integrate as an active member of the project teams working on different patent landscape reports, including defining the scope of different reports and accompanying search strategies (of patents and scientific literature), and preparing analysis and visualizations to develop a data storytelling approach to the final reports;
(b) Expand the online community platform to allow the growing Patent Analytics Community of Practice to network, share best practice and collaborate;
(c) Develop interactive and engaging patent landscape reports, storylines and associated graphics on WIPOโs patent analytics webpages;ย
(d) Carry out background research to help us plan and choose the topic for the fourth edition of the WIPO Technology Trends flagship report;
(e) Improve WIPOโs patent analytics training resources to engage a wider audience through the use of multiple digital communication channels, and assist with the development of distance learning courses on patent analytics for the WIPO Academy.
3. Reportingย
The Consultant will report to the Patent Analytics Manager.
4. Profile (e.g. area of specialization/expertise, specific knowledge/skills/experience)
Essential
i. Expertise in the field of patent analytics (minimum of two yearsโ experience as a patent analyst), especially in large scale patent analytics projects and expertise in developing taxonomies using patent classifications and keyword;
ii. Postgraduate university degree in a technical field, law, economics, data science, or other related field;
iii. Knowledge of and experience with different patent search and analytics tools and databases;
iv. Excellent analytical, communication, drafting and presentation skills; critical thinking, service orientation and team spirit;
v. Excellent written and spoken English.
Desirable ย ย
i. Ability to communicate technical subject matter in a manner accessible to non-specialist audiences;
ii. Experience with open source tools such as Python and SQL;
iii. Experience working with organizations in developing countries and communication with different stakeholders in the innovation cycle;
iv. Knowledge of another UN language an advantage.
5. Duration of contract and paymentย
The contract will start on April 1, 2025, and will end on September 30, 2025. ย
