5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesUNFPA is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. UNFPAโ€™s new strategic plan (2022- 2025), focuses on three transformative results: to end preventable maternal deaths; end unmet need for family planning; and end gender-based violence and harmful practices. Ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health information and services, especially for women and girls, is the focus of the 2021-2025 Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP) for the Programme of the Cooperation between the Government of Indonesia and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Strong strategic communications is required to boost and promote the success of the CPAP implementation, and to ensure continuous support for the next CPAP In a world where fundamental human rights are at risk, we need principled and ethical staff, who embody these international norms and standards, and who will defend them courageously and with full conviction.

ContextThe United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the UN agency dedicated to sexual and reproductive health and rights. It works to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young personโ€™s potential is fulfilled. UNFPA supports access to family planning, maternal health services, and comprehensive sexuality education, especially in underserved and crisis-affected areas. It also champions gender equality by addressing gender-based violence and harmful practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation. Through partnerships with governments, civil society, and the private sector, UNFPA promotes data-driven policies and programs that empower women and young people, reduce inequalities, and advance sustainable development. UNFPA Asia and the Pacific is currently strengthening its partnerships with regional organizations such as ASEAN, SAARC, PIF, and regional multilateral development banks such as ADB, AIIB, NDB, as well as its philanthropic partnerships. The Partnerships Associate will support the UNFPA Asia and the Pacific Regional Office (APRO) in strengthening strategic engagement with public and private sector donors, including multilateral development banks, philanthropic organizations, and non-traditional bilateral donors. The Associate will play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of donor relations and resource mobilization efforts through research, coordination, and administrative support.

Living conditions and remarksLiving in Jakarta as a UN Volunteer (UNV) is generally comfortable, with the Volunteer Living Allowance sufficient to cover modest housing, food, and transport. The city offers good access to healthcare, a vibrant expat community, and a wide range of amenities, including shopping malls, gyms, and cultural venues. While public transport options are improving, traffic congestion remains a major challenge. English is spoken in professional settings, though Bahasa Indonesia is more common in daily life. Jakarta is relatively safe, with occasional petty crime and seasonal flooding. Overall, with reasonable adaptation, Jakarta provides a livable and dynamic environment for UNVs. You can check full entitlements at the duty station at https://app.unv.org/calculator. The complete UN Volunteer Conditions of Service is available at https://explore.unv.org/cos
