ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT:
WFP is one of the largest humanitarian and development agencies operating in Niger. Despite various operational challenges, WFP continues to implement the activities of its Country Strategic Plan, responding to the Government's priorities.
En 2024, WFP reached nearly 3.1 million people with targeted lifesaving and life changing support, working through national authorities and locally led organizations to deliver assistance in all regions of Niger. Regarding nutrition specific activities, WFP delivered a comprehensive package of interventions to support communities to prevent and manage moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) as part of the integrated resilience approach. WFP supported health centers and communities across Niger to ensure nutritionally vulnerable people received targeted assistance while communities were equipped with skills to mitigate the risks of malnutrition.
THE ROLE:
Lead community nutrition activities, including the promotion of the processing and use of local enriched or fortified nutritional products. Provide support to nutrition programmes and activities to contribute to meeting the nutritional needs of WFP beneficiaries
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive, within delegated authority):
- Contribute to the development of nutrition projects and activities, plans and processes, ensuring alignment with wider nutrition policies and guidance.
- Scale up community-based nutrition activities, including Learning and Nutritional Rehabilitation Centers (Foyers dโApprentissage et de Rรฉhabilitation Nutritionnelle โ FARN) and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (Pรฉrimรจtre Brachial โ PB) mother/parent groups.
- Support the development of strategies and plans to ensure local ownership and long-term sustainability of these activities at all levels.
- Strengthen the understanding of nutrition-sensitive programming and ensure a progressive approach to integrating nutrition-sensitive actions into programs, strategies, and policies.
- Strengthen the strategic partnership with UNICEF on nutrition by addressing gaps in the treatment and prevention of child wasting, and by conducting nutritional surveys such as the Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transitions (SMART), Rapid SMART, and Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM/PCIMA) coverage surveys.
- Strengthen the capacity of Ministry of Public Health (Ministรจre de la Santรฉ Publique โ MSP) structures to implement and monitor activities for the prevention and treatment of acute malnutrition, and to collect and analyze data using the District Health Information Software, version 2 (DHIS2).
- Support the strengthening of national nutrition initiatives, including the development of government policies, strategies, action plans, protocols, and guidelines on nutrition, in line with the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, international guidance, and the latest evidence.
- Liaise with implementing partners (internal and external) to monitor ongoing projects, ensuring effective collaboration, timeliness and efficiency, and highlight potential risks to project delivery.
- Contribute to strengthening the capacities of the Union of Cooperative Societies (Union des Sociรฉtรฉs Coopรฉratives โ USCOOPS), the Food Technology Service (Service de Technologie Alimentaire โ STA), and the Social Safety Net (Sรฉcuritรฉ Sociale Filets โ SSF) units, and increase the production of fortified flour and enriched oil within the USCOOPS and Transformation Units (UTs).
- Strengthen statistical data reporting at the community level and participate in documenting the integrated package good practices and scaling up successful models
- Support the identification of potential partners and partnership negotiations to ensure a collaborative and holistic approach to meeting nutrition needs.
- Support the capacity building of WFP staff, partners and national government to prepare for and respond to nutrition needs for example the production and review of training materials.
- Guide more junior staff, acting as a point of referral and supporting them with more complex analysis and queries.
- Other as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education : Advanced University degree in Public Health Nutrition, Nutrition, Food Technology, Medicine or other relevant field.
Language: Fluency (level C) in French and English required
Expรฉrience: At least three (3) years of postgraduate professional experience or 5 years of experience after the Bachelor Degree
DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE- Experience working with governments, partners and communities on nutrition activities
- Experience and exposure to implementation of national/international development programmes.
- Experience working in public health/food security/ nutrition related activities.
- Experience identifying and defining nutrition issues/problems within a country.
