Organizational Setting

Monitoring and Enhancement of Remote Sensing for National Forest Inventory (MERANTI) is a threeโ€‘year project funded by Norway and managed by the FAO Office in Jakarta. It serves as Indonesiaโ€™s new National Forest Inventory (NFI) initiative, integrating enhanced landโ€‘monitoring approaches to improve the accuracy, availability, transparency and timeliness of forest and treeโ€‘resource data. Through the combination of a strengthened NFI and an improved national forest monitoring system, MERANTI aims to significantly enhance Indonesiaโ€™s capacity to generate highโ€‘quality forest information. This strengthened data ecosystem will:

1.ย ย ย ย Improve national strategic planning and decisionโ€‘making on forests and trees
2.ย ย ย ย Support climate change mitigation efforts
3.ย ย ย ย Enable greater access to scalable climate finance
4.ย ย ย ย Strengthen Indonesiaโ€™s position in climateโ€‘finance negotiations
5.ย ย ย ย Increase opportunities for resultsโ€‘based payments (RBPs) and other forms of resultsโ€‘based contributions (RBC)
6.ย ย ย ย Ensure fulfilment of Indonesiaโ€™s international commitments to global climate and sustainable development goalsย 
The collaboration will also expand to other projects and programmes related to forest monitoring, including the UK-funded AIM4Forests initiative and affiliated programmes within the FAO portfolio and pipeline, as appropriate.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall managerial administrative leadership of the FAO Representative in Indonesia, the general supervision of the Lead Technical Officer, and the direct supervision of the FAO UN-REDD Programme Coordinator, the Forest Monitoring National Project Coordinator will have the following key functions: ย 

1.ย ย ย ย Coordination between FAO, Directorate General of Forestry Planning/IPSDH and other agencies and partners in the project, including Donor Counterpart for effective delivery of project results and outputs and the achievement of outcomes
2.ย ย ย ย Coordinate the implementation of the project approach and all project activities with a view on long term sustainability and institutionalization of the National Forest Monitoring System
3.ย ย ย ย Facilitation of knowledge building, management and dissemination related to project outputs and results
4.ย ย ย ย Monitoring and reporting on progress of project implementation

Extensive work experience in forest monitoring and forest inventory.

Tasks and responsibilities

โ€ข ย ย ย ย Advise and assist the Directorate General of Forestry Planning/IPSDH and other stakeholders in developing feasible approaches and strategies for successful project implementation within time and budget constraints.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Identify risks and opportunities for the project and regularly assess risks.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Coordinate advisory and technical assistance activities from FAO Headquarters (HQ), FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP), and national/international consultants.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Coordinate and facilitate participation of all relevant stakeholders, including collaboration with the Directorate General of Forestry Planning/IPSDH, the National Project Director (NPD), and IPSDH technical staff.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Ensure effective coordination with the UN-REDD Programme, AIM4Forest project, and other relevant initiatives in Indonesia.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Maintain collaboration with FAO Country Office in Jakarta and the project team for timely and effective delivery.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Develop and implement project workplans, budgets, and reports.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Monitor project progress (physical and financial) and ensure data availability for Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E).
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Facilitate and arrange consultations and meetings to secure inputs from partners and stakeholders.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Support knowledge sharing, documentation, and publication of project outputs.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Support the work of national and international consultants, including operational arrangements, meetings, and review of reports and workplans.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Perform any other relevant tasks assigned by FAO in coordination with the Forestry project team.

Minimum Requirements ย  ย 

โ€ข ย ย ย ย Postgraduate degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Geography, or a closely related field. A Bachelorโ€™s degree in a relevant field may be considered in lieu of a postgraduate degree.ย 
โ€ข ย ย ย ย At least 8 years of professional experience in coordinating programmes and projects in the areas of natural resource management, environmental conservation, or closely related fields for candidates with a postgraduate degree or at least 12 years of relevant professional experience for candidates with a Bachelorโ€™s degree.
โ€ข ย ย ย ย Working knoeledge of ย English and Indonesian language
