5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

About IRRI The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff. Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
Job Purpose

The primary assignments span two key areas: distributing IRRI breeding lines to collaborators for genotyping and phenotyping, and identifying and validating genes through molecular biology. Success hinges on seamless coordination with the Rice Breeding Department for seed preparation, precise phenotyping and genotyping, and all molecular cloning activities.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Seed Management and Logistics: Coordination with the Rice Breeding Innovations Team and Seed Health Unit for seed collections and shipment.
  • Genotyping and Phenotyping: Conduct genotyping and phenotyping of breeding lines and wild rice introgression lines (marker development, allele typing of target genes)
  • Molecular Biology and Genetics: Execute molecular biology and molecular genetics experiments for candidate gene analysis and validation. This encompasses gene mapping, various PCR applications, plasmid vector construction, and contributing to genome editing and transgenic approaches.
  • Research Support: Provide direct assistance to researchers on ongoing projects, contributing to experimental design, execution, and data analysis.
  • Reporting: Prepare comprehensive research reports summarizing experimental procedures, results, and conclusions
