The laundry Attendant is responsible for collecting, washing, disinfecting, drying, iron and distribution of laundry generated in the Hospital. The laundry Attendant plays a key role in promoting infection prevention and creating a conducive environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collect Soiled Linens
    Retrieve used linens, gowns, and towels from patient care areas following infection control protocols.
  • Sort Laundry
    Separate items by type (e.g., sheets, scrubs, patient gowns, towels) and contamination level for proper washing.
  • Operate Laundry Equipment
    Load and unload washers and dryers, ensuring correct water temperature, detergent, disinfectant and cycle settings.
  • Disinfect and Sanitize
    Apply hospital-approved chemicals and processes to ensure laundry is free from pathogens.
  • Inspect Linens
    Check for stains, tears, or damage; remove items that need repair or replacement.
  • Fold and Package Clean Linens
    Iron, fold, stack, and wrap clean laundry for distribution to patient care units.
  • Maintain Laundry Area
    Keep machines, floors, and work surfaces clean and organized.

      laundry machine, dryers, industrial iron, laundry carts and sewing machine.

      Safety & Compliance

      • Wear appropriate PPE at all times during waste handling.
      • Follow infection control procedures to prevent contamination.
      • Ensure compliance with local regulations and hospital laundry management policies.

        Documentation

        • Record laundry collection and distribution activities in logs/electronic systems.
        • Report any incidents and non-compliance immediately.
        • Replenishing environmental services related consumables in designated areas.
        • Monitor supply levels and report shortages to the supervisor.
        • Clean and maintain equipment used.
        • Adhere to all safety guidelines, infection control policies, and cleaning procedures.
        • Wear and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties.
        • Report any maintenance issues, equipment malfunctions, or safety hazards promptly.
        • Interact courteously with patients, visitors, and staff.

          Education and Work Experience Requirements:

          • Strong initiative and self-motivated, with a strong commitment to teamwork and humanitarian principles.
          • Disciplined flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to learn from others.
          • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
          • Energy and stamina to withstand long working hours and often stressful conditions.
          • Having fast analytical skills for risk assessment and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
          • Interest in social justice, healthcare, and a preferential option for the poor.
          • Professional proficiency in Krio is required and proficiency in English is an added advantage.
          • WASCE
          • Be able to read and write.
          • Previous experience in Laundry services.
          • Familiarity with industrial laundry equipment and disinfection processes.
          • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
          • Ability to follow instructions, work independently and as part of a team.
          • Good time management and organizational skills.
