1. Organizational Context
The WIPO Academy IP eLearning Section seeks qualified tutors to support the delivery of its online/distance learning courses on intellectual property (IP) in all six official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish) and Portuguese. Tutors will contribute to enhancing the learning experience by guiding participants through course content, facilitating synchronous and asynchronous learning, supporting learner engagement, assessing assignments, and providing timely feedback. ย
A. Organizational Settingย
The WIPO Academy IP eLearning Section annually offers 60 online courses in all six official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish) and Portuguese, covering a wide range of IP-related topics. These courses cater to a wide target audience, including inventors and creators, entrepreneurs, lawyers, IP professionals, policy makers/ government officials, scientists/ researchers, diplomats, students, and teachers of IP. Each course typically runs for approximately four (4) months, whose delivery and facilitation is supported by qualified tutors. Tutors will engage learners through synchronous sessions (e.g., Zoom) and asynchronous methods using WIPO's eLearning platforms and tools. Subject to the volume of enrollments, multiple tutors may be assigned to individual courses to work as a team. This work contributes to the Academy's objective of delivering high-quality, inclusive, and interactive IP education to a global audience.
B. Purpose Statementย
Tutors will play a key role in facilitating the delivery and conduct of online courses on IP and related topics by guiding learners through the course contents, conducting live or recorded lectures, monitoring learner progress, promoting learner engagement, preparing and grading assessments, and providing expert academic support/ feedback throughout the learning journey. ย
C. Reporting ย
Tutors will report to the eLearning Training Manager/ Head of the WIPO Academy IP eLearning Section.
2. Duties and Responsibilitiesย
- Facilitate learning by guiding learners through online course materials, clarifying concepts, and ensuring active participation.
- Deliver live or recorded lectures, webinars, virtual discussion forums, and Q&A sessions as required.
- Monitor learner progress by tracking participation, engagement, and comprehension levels.
- Provide academic support by responding to learner inquiries and addressing learning challenges promptly.
- Conduct periodic assessments by reviewing and grading assignments using rubrics and other evaluation methods.
- Prepare final assessments/ exams by reviewing the course materials and proposing new exam questions in a manner that validates the learning outcomes of a course.
- Grade final assessments/exams, including conducting plagiarism checks and providing individualized feedback at the end of a course.
- Facilitate interactive discussions on specific topics by elaborating on concepts, posing hypotheticals/ questions and suggesting additional materials.
- Utilize e-learning tools effectively to ensure an engaging online learning experience.
- Maintain timely communication with learners and the WIPO Academy team.
- Contribute to course improvement through feedback based on learner engagement and performance.
- Attend training sessions/ briefings on tutoring best practices, live lecturing and using elearning platforms and tools, organized by the WIPO Academy.
3. Requirementsย
A. Education ย
- Advanced degree in intellectual property (IP), law, international trade, innovation management, or a related field.
- Certificate in teaching and learning online (will be an asset).
B. Experience (Essential)
- (for professionals) Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in intellectual property law, policy, or management in academic institutions/ universities, law firms, IP consultancies, companies/ corporations, government agencies, or international organizations.
- (for academics/ teachers) Minimum of 3 yearsโ experience in teaching, training, or tutoring in IP law, international trade, innovation management, or a related field in an academic or professional setting.
- Demonstrated experience in facilitating online or blended learning courses.
C. Experience (Desirable)
- Experience using web-conferencing tools (e.g. Zoom), Learning Management Systems (Moodle) and plagiarism detection tools (Turnitin).
- Experience in developing academic assessments/ exams on IP and related topics (multiple-choice, essay-type and/or open book) in accordance with established learning outcomes of courses.
- Experience supporting diverse learners in a virtual environment
D. Language (Essential)
- Working knowledge of English
- Proficiency in at least one of the other UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) or Portuguese
E. Language (Desirable)
- Proficiency in multiple UN languages.

4. Duration of contract and paymentย
Contract Period: Selected applicants will be offered a framework agreement up to 5 years starting on January 15, 2025. The applicants will be given assignments as the business needs arise during the agreement period. Tutors will be engaged on a short-term tutoring assignments (up to 4 months) aligned with specific course schedules.
5. Remuneration
Applicants are requested to indicate their maximum expected remuneration for each tutoring assignment, in Swiss francs, Euros, British Pounds, or USD. WIPO will assess the proposed fee against its internal benchmarks and value-for-money considerations. Payment will be made upon confirmation of satisfactory completion of the agreed deliverables for each assignment.
6. Other informationย
ICS providers fall outside the coverage of employment contracts for WIPO Staff members and are not subject to the WIPO Staff Regulations and Rules. The ICS provider has no entitlement to vacation or sick leave (except for WIPO official holidays), or to medical insurance or a staff pension.ย
