The Pension and Endowments Department (PEN), which is part of the Treasury Vice Presidency, is responsible for the financial management and administration of the World Bank Group's funded benefit plans, including the retirement scheme - the Staff Retirement Plan, the retiree medical and life insurance programs - the Retired Staff Benefits Plan, and other ancillary benefits (the Plans).ย The Pension Finance Committee, appointed by the Bank Group President and chaired by the Chief Financial Officer, has oversight responsibility for the financial management of the plans.

The Pension Investments (PENIN) team is responsible for the investment management of the pension plan assets. The key responsibilities include developing the investment strategy, which is outlined in the policy framework and strategic asset allocation and approved by the PFC, and executing the investment strategy through external fund management, ensuring the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors. PENIN manages approximately US$40 billion across various asset classes such as fixed income, public equities, private equity, real assets, private credit, and absolute return strategies.ย
Investment Analysts in PENIN are allocated to a particular team upon entry and may be reassigned to other investment teams at the discretion of the Manager of PENIN in response to business priorities. This Investment Analyst position is intended at this stage for the Fixed Income team.ย
The Investment Analystโs responsibilities, as a member of the Fixed Income team, will include, among others things: portfolio construction; manager selection; assessing tactical allocations; monitoring the portfolio of existing managers; preparing Investment Committee materials; supporting due diligence activities; monitoring the portfolio and market developments; and assist with other activities as needed across the pension investment team. The roles and responsibilities are outlined in more detail below.
Roles & Responsibilities:
As part of the Team, the Investment Analyst will assist and support the investment team in executing its work program. The specific duties will be, but are not limited to, the following tasks:
โข Conduct market research on the Fixed Income portfolio.
โข Participate in constructing a Fixed Income portfolio, sourcing investment ideas, and conducting due diligence when hiring new managers.
โข Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses of Fixed Income managers to assess individual managers' performance and portfolio fit.
โข Assist in monitoring the existing managersโ portfolio performance and analyzing risk and performance attributions.
โข Assist in enhancing tools for quantitative analysis in manager selection, manager monitoring, risk management, and portfolio construction.
โข Assist in developing and testing financial models (e.g., models for extreme scenarios and hedging methods).
โข Develop, enhance, and manage existing manager databases.
โข Evaluating the performance of the overall portfolio and having an active interaction with the Pensions Middle Office (PENMO)
โข Review and assist in preparation of performance reporting package on a monthly and quarterly basis (in conjunction with PENMO).
โข Assist in the monthly rebalancing process.
โข Prepare Investment Committee materials (memos and minutes).
โข Assist in preparing presentations for the Pension Finance Committee.
โข Staying up to date on all relevant market information.
โข Assist in additional projects as needed within PEN or other departments in the Bank.
Selection Criteria
1. Advanced degree (Masterโs degree preferred), preferably in finance, mathematics, or engineering, and/or two years of relevant work experience in finance and investing (preferably focusing on fixed income portfolios).
2. Professional Certification in CFA and/or CAIA is a plus.
3. Solid econometrics, statistical, and mathematical skills with a focus on finance or financial economics.
4. Proven quantitative and qualitative analytical and problem-solving skills.
5. Proficiency in Excel and Excel macros, Word and Powerpoint is required. Familiarity with other quantitative analytical packages such as Python, R and Matlab is desirable.
6. Proactive in searching for new investment ideas/strategies.
7. Experienced user of computer systems and analytics.
8. Creative thinker, and quick learner, with initiative, drive and attention to details.
9. Proven capacity to multi-task, deliver results and respond quickly and effectively to requests. Ability to work under pressure.
10. Excellent communication -- both verbal and written skills are required. Experience giving presentations and training is desirable.
11. Good team player with strong interpersonal skills, and commitment to work in a team-oriented, multi-cultural environment.
12. Sound business judgment and confidence of convictions as they relate to investment decisions.
13. Curious, creative, and original thinker, and quick learner, with initiative, drive and willingness to take appropriate risks.
