Work LocationMontreal Expected durationThree months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by UNEP. This internship is located at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, under the overall supervision of Programme Management Officer for Stakeholder Engagement and Cooperation Unit, Implementation Support Division. The internship has a start date of October 2025 for a duration of three (3) months with a possibility of an extension depending on the needs of the Organization. The Internship is for a maximum duration of 6 months and UNPAID. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will assist with the preparation of documents and activities that support the work of the Secretariat on cooperation with other conventions and international organizations, and on engagement and participation of stakeholders in CBD processes. Under the overall supervision of the Programme Management Officer the intern will: (inter alia) โข Support activities and meetings (internal and external) on cooperation and synergies with other conventions and multilateral environmental agreements, international organizations, international financial institutions and relevant related processes, intergovernmental bodies and processes, and multi-stakeholder initiatives and on engagement and participation of stakeholders in CBD processes and implementation, including in the context of the missions and activities of the Executive Secretary with civil society organizations; โข Assist, through research and analysis, in the preparation of other documents on Cooperation with other conventions and international organizations and other relevant items, such as the Global review of collective progress in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, as well as on other areas of work including under the Unit including in the context of cooperation with organizations, bodies and processes with a focus on economics and finance ; โข Support collection and analysis of information submitted by other conventions and international organizations and stakeholders in the context of the global review of progress in the implementation of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGB); โข Support coordination processes as well as the development of communication and outreach materials on cooperation and stakeholder participation and engagement and/or relevant to the Implementation Support Division; โข Assist in responding to ad hoc requests from civil society organizations; โข Assist with the revision and drafting of web content under the portals on cooperation and partnerships and stakeholder engagement and participation, in particular youth and civil society, in coordination with relevant officers from the SEC unit and the knowledge management unit; โข Assist in other duties as may be requested by the supervisor(s). Qualifications/special skillsApplicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor 's level or equivalent). (c) Have graduated with a university degree. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred area of study: Be enrolled in a masterโs degree or PhD, or recent graduate in related fields, such as economics, international relations, communications or other related fields. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
