Work LocationAddis Ababa Expected duration3 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Macroeconomics, Finance and Governance Division (MFGD) is headed by a Director and reports to the Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme). The Division is responsible for supporting African member States in their efforts to accelerate economic transformation and inclusive growth through effective development planning, improved macroeconomic management and economic governance as well as better mobilization and allocation of domestic and international public finance. It is divided into four main sections: Macroeconomic Analysis Section (MAS), Development Planning Section (DPS), Economic Governance and Public Finance Section (EGPFS), and Finance and Domestic Resource Mobilization Section (FDRMS). Duties and Responsibilities Under the overall guidance of the Director, and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Finance and Domestic Resource Mobilization Section, the consultant will support the Divisionโ€™s work on G20-related streams by carrying out the following tasks: Economic or sector analysis โ€ข Develops socio-economic databases and qualitative information in the priority areas and high-level deliverables of the South African G20 Presidency. โ€ข Interprets, applies and, as necessary, adapts econometric models to determine trends, patterns and relationships and to analyse the effects of alternative policies and assumptions. โ€ข Drafts specified inputs for technical papers and analytical studies on selected global, regional, national or sector aspects of economic development and other various thematic areas for G20 related work. โ€ข Identifies and analyses policy proposals made elsewhere relating to assigned topics. โ€ข Attends international, regional, and national meetings to collect information and to hold discussions with colleagues in other institutions. โ€ข Assists in the organization and servicing of technical and consultative expert group meetings for advocacy and engagement โ€ข Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by the Deputy Executive Secretary โ€“ Programmes (DES-P) and the Director related to the G20. Intergovernmental support โ€ข Prepares inputs for reports of the South African G20 Secretariat. โ€ข Follow the G20 meetings and prepare summary reports. โ€ข Prepares input to statements by ECAโ€™s senior staff to such meetings. โ€ข Assists in the organization of panels, round tables etc. on economic issues and other various thematic areas to the South African G20 Secretariat Technical cooperation โ€ข Participates in missions and provides substantive backstopping for the Director and the DES-P on related G20 issues, usually as a member of a team. โ€ข Contributes to the preparation of material for the approval of regional, country or sector technical cooperation projects. โ€ข Monitors, backstops and assesses the implementation of technical cooperation programmes and projects. General โ€ข Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work related to the G20 streams of work. โ€ข Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally. โ€ข Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Qualifications/special skillsAdvanced university degree (masterโ€™s degree or equivalent) in economics, finance, econometrics or related area is required. A first level university degree in a combination of additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the master's degree โ€ข A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related areas. economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required โ€ข 2 years or more of experience in data analytics or related areas is desirable. โ€ข โ€ข Experience in Africa or on African-related issues is desirable. โ€ข Experience in multi-lateral / intergovernmental processes is desirable โ€ข Experience in financing for sustainable development in the regional and or global level is desirable. โ€ข Experience in Global Financial Architecture and G20 issues is highly desirable Languagesโ€ข English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this consultancy position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
