Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities. UN-Habitat promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination and poverty. In its work in Sub Saharan Africa, the agency, through the Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) supports its member states to address the rapid unplanned urbanization in the region. The overall goal for UN-Habitat and itโ€™s operation in Sub-Saharan Africa is to leverage sustainable urbanization for a transformative, resilient, and peaceful cities in Africa while addressing the housing challenges alongside challenges associated to land and basic services. By addressing the challenges, the agency will aim to further impact the following three main areas; - - Equitable and inclusive prosperity for poverty eradication - Preparedness, response, recovery and reconstruction - Environment and climate action To effectively implement itโ€™s mandate, the Regional Office for Africa partners with regional and Global organizations including private sector partners. For this role, the office is collaborating with Shenzhen Poweroak Newener Company Limited support the project: Lighting an African Family (LAAF) Project: Improving access to Clean Energy and environmental practices in Africa implemented in the following four countries, i.e Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria.The purpose of this project is to support the increase in access to clean energy and improve environmental practices in selected African cities and communities. The project will produce an analysis of the level of access to clean energy backed by existing data in informal areas are peri urban areas of select cities, conduct capacity building and technology transfer exercises at the community levels as well as facilitate demonstrative handing over of solar technology in a bid to advocate for greener transition to cleaner forms of energy. To effectively implement itโ€™s mandate UN-Habitat, through the Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) is hiring an urban Energy Intern to support the office in implementing itโ€™s strategic priorities. This position will be located in UN-Habitat Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) in Nairobi, Kenya and under the overall supervision of the Director, Regional Office for Africa, the intern will perform the following duties; Responsibilities โ€ข Support research broadly on urban energy but specifically on consumption pattern of energy in the informal settlements and peri-urban areas. โ€ข Develop a stakeholder matrix of key actors within the energy sector in Sub Saharan Africa. โ€ข Support interaction with country offices for development of project concept notes and any other interactions. โ€ข Prepare discussions, webinar and other forms of meeting related to urban energy in the region. โ€ข Support the reporting and communication efforts of the office with liaison of field offices and the global office. โ€ข Undertake any other duties as may be assigned. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Currently enrolled and have attended University courses in the last 12 months inclusive of having completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated in the last 6 months in urban planning, environmental management, energy, development studies, Economics, or related field. In addition, successful applicants are expected to have demonstrated ability in one or more areas listed below: โ€ข Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) โ€ข Ability to summarize and analyze technical urban and housing content for various audience โ€ข Strong communication skills in English, knowledge in French is desirable. โ€ข Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms; โ€ข Advanced knowledge of standard software packages, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud etc. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Masterโ€™s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelorโ€™s, Masterโ€™s or Ph.D. Programme.
