Work LocationHome-based Expected duration01.12.25 - 31.05.26 Duties and ResponsibilitiesCreated in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. Economic growth and community well-being are directly impacted by disasters. As key members of communities and drivers of growth, private sector companies have an important role to play in reducing disaster risk. As threats to communities and economic livelihoods increase, the private sector continues to grow its understanding of where to adapt and respond. To drive change and leadership from the business community, the ARISE Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies was started by UNDRR in 2015 to support the private sector to become a key partner in reducing disaster risk. It has grown to over 650 members and 30 networks across the world. There is incredible energy and appetite to strengthen ARISE to effect greater change in how the private sector invests in a risk-informed sustainable future by ensuring risk reduction and resilience are core business priorities, and supply chain resilience strengthened, including of small and medium enterprise (SMEs). In addition, the UNDRR-convened network of Corporate Chief Resilience Officers (CCRO) from ten multinational firms in ten sector has co-created a business Resilience Maturity Assessment tool to support efforts. ARISE and CCRO, together with national business associations and other UN private sector initiatives, and business associations to understand businessesโ€™ resilience maturity. The network gathers senior experts from 10 to 20 large multinationals to share, establish, and disseminate good practices internationally. The internship is for a period of six months, ideally from 01 December 2025 to 31 May 2025. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of the Global Coordinator, ARISE Private Sector Alliance and Partnerships Advisor, based in Panama. The internship will be home-based. Responsibilities Responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: - Support the programme management of the ARISE Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies aimed at strengthening private sector engagement for disaster risk reduction, and in cooperation with the Corporate Chief Resilience Officers (CCRO) network and other relevant partners and initiatives. - Support outreach and development of content for UNDRR and ARISE websites, workspaces, social media, and other relevant channels with a focus on impact stories. - Support the organization of ARISE webinars, meetings and workshops, side events. - Enhance and maintain databases, collecting and systematizing information on members, projects, tools, and others related to these initiatives. Conducts data analysis, visualization and reporting. - Research, analyze and present information about private sector contributions to disaster risk reduction, supply chain and SME disaster resilience and other relevant topics - Provides support to policy development and preparing written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports, presentations, meeting minutes, talking points and speeches. - Provide ad hoc support to other UNDRR partnership and stakeholder engagement work. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelorโ€™s level or equivalent). No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Masterโ€™s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelorโ€™s, Masterโ€™s or PH.D.
