Work LocationThis internship is designed to be in-person but can be adjusted based on the request by the successful candidate Expected duration3-6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) is an entity within the secretariat of the UN and was established in 2003. It is unique in that it is dedicated specifically to the Africa region and focuses on Africa's priorities and international support to Africa's development. OSAA's core functions are advisory, advocacy, coordination and monitoring. The Office works with all parts of the UN system in an effort to ensure coherence in the critical work of the UN on the inter-related issues of peace, security and development in Africa. In particular, the intern will report to the Director of the Division for Policy, Monitoring and Global Advocacy. The purpose of this internship is to provide support to the Office of the Director of Policy, Monitoring and Global Advocacy in delivering effective advocacy in the context of events leading up to and part of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. The intern will contribute to research, knowledge production in the form of policy briefs, and advocacy and communication associated with OSAAโs strategic agenda. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Contribute to advocacy activities on the Call to Action emanating from the Africa Dialogue Series on the AU theme of the year: Assist in advocating for the AU theme of the year of โJustice for Africa and for people of African descent, including the case for reparationsโ based on the Call to Action produced in OSAAโs Africa Dialogue Series and its associated policy brief. 2. Contribute to the organization of the High Level United Nations Monitoring Mechanism on contributions by partners to the implementation of Agenda 2063: Assist in the preparation of documentation, coordination of partners and the production of advocacy related products. 3. Contribute to the organization of โAfrica Dayโ at the High Level Political Forum on implementation of the 2030 Agenda: Assist in the preparation of documentation and facilitate coordination with the African Union Permanent Mission and other partners. 4. Contribute to the preparation of OSAA activities around the 80th session of the UN General Assembly: Assist in the preparation of documentation, and coordination of OSAAโs engagement around activities associated with the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly. 5. Contribute to the preparation of the 10th edition of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development on Africa Japan cooperation in a virtual setting: Contribute to the preparation of documents and coordination with other partners for the preparation of the Summit in a virtual setting. 6. Contribute to the preparation of the 3rd Quarter meeting of the UN Inter-Departmental Task Force on African Affairs: Contribute to the preparation of the policy brief, and coordination amongst partners for the 3rd quarter meeting of the IDTFAA. 7. Prepare one policy brief on one of the following issues: 1) Integrating reparatory justice into sustainable development frameworks, 2) Delivering decent jobs and social protection in Africa by leveraging the digital economy, 3) Energy and climate priorities for Africa ahead of the Africa Climate Summit and COP30, specifically on sustainable and climate resilient cities, 4) Mobilizing financing for development for African countries or 5) Addressing the root causes of conflict in Africa by leveraging the nexus between peace and development. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelorโs degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Masterโs or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelorโs, Masterโs or PH.D.
