Result of ServiceThe main objective of consultancy is to support the successful implementation of the work under the Global Partnership on Plastic Pollution and Marine Litter on Plastic Monitoring and Assessment Harmonization and associated Global Plastics Hub enhancement. Work LocationNairobi Expected duration8 Months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The overall objective of UNEP's Ecosystems Division is to support countries in conserving, restoring and sustainably managing their terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems, the biodiversity they contain and the products and services they provide for human well-being and prosperity. It helps countries develop policies and programmes to respond to ecosystems challenges and reduce pollution from land-based and sea-based activities, increase resilience to climate change and reflect linkages between poverty and environment in their development planning. UNEPโ€™s Source to Sea Pollution Unit plays a crucial role in identifying and acting on the challenge of land-based pollution. The Unit focuses on issues including but not limited to plastic pollution and marine litter, nutrient management, wastewater and physical alteration and destruction of habitat and its activities serve to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically SDG 6 and 14. It also contributes to UNEPโ€™s Medium-Term Strategy 2022-2025, and as well as to the implementation of UNEPโ€™s Chemicals and Pollutions Action sub-programme. The work of the Unit also contribute to the implementation of numerous United Nations Environment Assemblyโ€™s (UNEA) resolutions, including for example โ€œMarine litter and microplasticsโ€ (UNEP/EA.1/6, 2/11, 3/7 and 4/6), โ€œProtection of the Marine Environment from Land-Based Activitiesโ€ (UNEP/EA.4/11), โ€œSustainable Nitrogen Managementโ€ (UNEP/EA.4/14, UNEP/EA.5/2), and โ€œEnd plastic pollution: Towards an international legally binding instrumentโ€ (UNEP/EA.5/14). To counter the challenges posed by land-based activities, the Unit is implementing the project titled โ€œProtecting the Marine Environment from Land-Based Pollution through Strengthened Coordination of Global Action.โ€ The consultant will be focused on the โ€œCapacity development to catalyze actions and commitments at the national and global level to reduce plastic pollution including in the marine environmentโ€ project, also known as the โ€œCapacity Development for Action on Plastic Pollutionโ€ (CDA-PP) project, funded by the United States Department of State. This project is ending in September 2025, and the consultant will play a key role in its finalization. This assignment is within UNEPโ€™s Ecosystems Division, under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer on Plastics and overall supervision of the Chief of the Source to Sea Pollution Unit, and in close consultation with other relevant divisions, regional offices and regional seas programmes. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Global Plastics Hub enhancement: a) Map potential data sources in selected 10 countries coordinating with other divisions and partners for its integration into the Country Dashboard of the Global Plastics Hub. b) Map the existing data using the Material Flow Analysis tool for 5 countries and provide country trend analysis. c) Update and streamline the knowledge resources under the Knowledge Hub of the Global Plastics Hub, including categorization of case studies. d) Updating the 3-year plan of the Global Plastics Hub, through monitoring and reporting the traffic to the Global Plastics Hub, as well as supporting resource mobilization from other divisions and partners 2. Organize online meetings for the GPML Communities of Practice a) Organize online meetings for the GPML Communities of Practice (i.e. CoP on Plastic Monitoring and Assessment Harmonization and CoP on Informing Action). Qualifications/special skillsBachelorโ€™s degree in computer science, information technology or a closely related field is required. Masterโ€™s degree in a related field is desirable. Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in IT management, computer science, website development and/or management and data analytics is required. Experience in working on the topic of environmental data analytics, knowledge management, particularly on plastic pollution issues is desirable Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills are required. - Strong analytical skills, with the ability to produce high-quality analysis are required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required.
