OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

In accordance with UNESCOโ€™s Programme and Budget for 2024-2025 (42 C/5), Major Programme II: Natural Sciences โ€“ Strategic Objective 2, Outcome 3.SC1 โ€“ โ€œInclusive knowledge and capacities of Member States strengthened to advance and apply science for sustainable management of natural resources, ecosystem and biodiversity conservation and restoration, and disaster risk resilienceโ€, under the authority of the Director of the Division of the Ecological and Earth Sciences and the overall responsibility of the Head of MAB Section: Network and Capacity Building, the consultant will collect and analyze data with the aim to:

  • Support the MAB programmeโ€™s digital transformation and the launch of a new digital platform in September 2025
  • Update and complete the programmeโ€™s inventory of biosphere reserve documentation and related data
  • Identify trends and gaps in the financial structures of biosphere reserves

    Long Description

    Specifically, the consultant will:

    1. Ensure that biosphere reserve documentation is correctly entered in the MAB database and ready for migration:

    a. Prepare documentation to be entered into the MAB database, ensuring the right format and tagging based on the contents.

    b. Review and flag documents that should be migrated to the new digital platform.

    2. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of biosphere reserve structured data:

    a. Update missing and incorrect data on area, population, center points.

    3. Undertake data analysis on the financial structure of biosphere reserves.

    a. Review data related to biosphere reserve budgets and funding structure.

    b. Prepare analysis and visualization of relevant financial data. An outline for the analysis should be determined in coordination with the Secretariat before proceeding.

  • 1/a. Database up-to-date with all relevant documents, as well as tagging and metadata completed (around 900 documents).
1/b. Methodology developed and followed for flagging documents for migration. 2/a. Structured data entered into the database for all biosphere reserves. 3/a. A structured data table outlining trends in the financial structure of biosphere reserves. 3/b. An analysis report outlining main trends observed, and recommendations on how to visualize the relevant data.

Work Experience

At least 2 years of relevant experience in the field of conservation and/or sustainability

Experience working in an international organization or context

Skills and competencies

Languages

Excellent knowledge of the English language (spoken and written).
