IMEO Senior Product Design Consultant - Eye on Methane data platform

Result of ServiceThe consultant will provide strategic product design leadership for the IMEO Eye on Methane data platform suite of tools. This senior role will oversee key elements such as UI, data visualization, working closely with subject-matter experts and designers to ensure solutions align with business objectives while upholding high usability standards. The consultant will collaborate across a wide range of internal teams — including scrum, development, data, marketing, communications, and programmatic teams — to deliver products that advance the IMEO vision. Work LocationRemote Expected duration12 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-driven, action-focused initiative that drives deep reductions in methane emissions– the second biggest contributor to global climate change and a key opportunity to reduce warming in the neart-erm. IMEO’s mission is to provide the open, reliable, and actionable methane data needed to cut emissions at the speed and scale necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. To do this, IMEO is harnessing a methane data revolution under way thanks to rapidly advancing technology and momentum for methane action. IMEO collects, integrates, and reconciles data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national emissions inventories. The IMEO Eye on Methane data platform delivers open, reliable and actionable global methane emissions data from satellites, companies and methane science studies—all in one user-friendly interface. It is designed to empower companies and governments to drive impactful methane mitigation action, while providing transparent, reliable data to civil society and media. The Senior Product Designer will provide strategic product and design leadership for the entire IMEO Methane Data Platform and its associated digital ecosystem. This role will make sure that the platform's vision is defined and that this vision, the user experience (UX), and user interface (UI) are cohesive, data-driven, and impactful for key audiences. Under the supervision of the Manager, Eye on Methane data platform, the consultant will drive the product's design strategy from a user-centric perspective, translating user insights into a clear and actionable product roadmap. The consultant will also oversee the execution of the product roadmap, ensuring alignment between design, development, and business objectives. The consultant will carry out the following duties: Product Design and Strategy: ○ Define and champion the platform vision that ladders back to the business objectives. ○ Define and champion a strategic product roadmap for the platform, identifying key initiatives and timelines based on user needs, business goals, and technical feasibility. ○ Champion a user-centric design approach across the platform, ensuring product strategies align with user needs, stakeholder goals, and market trends. ○ Define and maintain a cohesive design system to ensure consistency across all IMEO digital platforms. ○ Work closely with product owner and development teams to ensure that design strategy and roadmap are a coordinated effort. Platform Development and Enhancement: ○ Tier 3 (Eye On Methane ‘Map’): Guide the data visualization team on the existing Tier 3 platform to refine map experience based on user feedback and evolving needs while taking on the UI specific interface needs outside of the map experience. ○ Tier 2 (Eye On Methane ‘Insight’): Lead the final design phase and support the development of the Tier 2 platform, expanding its scope for decision-makers. Create and execute a test plan with stakeholders, gather initial feedback and work with team on refinement. ○ Tier 1 (Eye On Methane ‘Detect’): Lead the design and planning for the development of the Tier 1 platform. This includes the integration of the OGMP reporting tool, ensuring a seamless user flow and data synchronization. ○ Guide data visualization team on Tier 1 data viz, while ensuring it is strictly adhering to business needs. ○ Internal Tools & Web Portal: Conduct usability testing of the internal OGMP web app, and IMEO plume viewer and contribute to the design and development of the supporting web portal to provide a comprehensive user experience. Omni-channel Design Oversight & and Cross-functional Collaboration: ○ Develop and implement an omni-channel design strategy that seamlessly integrates the Methane Data Platform with other digital and print channels to maximize reach and impact. ○ As required, provide guidance on content across channels, ensuring consistency in messaging and visual identity. ○ Contribute to key performance indicators (KPIs) for the platform, ensuring that design and product decisions are measured against strategic goals and user satisfaction. ○ Work closely with the product owner, scrum master, and development teams to maintain an aligned, achievable roadmap, ensuring design solutions are development-feasible and delivered ahead of business-critical milestones. Stakeholder Engagement ○ Engage with internal and external stakeholders to conduct user testing, gather feedback and ensure design solutions align with strategic goals, alongside detailed documentation on feedback and translation into insights for future iterations. ○ The consultant will provide technical support and undertake report drafting or project-wide proposals, managing dependencies between product initiatives to ensure smooth progress and prevent bottlenecks. This role will report to the Manager, IMEO, Eye on Methane data platform. Qualifications/special skillsA master's degree or equivalent in digital product design, human-computer interaction (HCI), or a related field is required. Over 10 years of progressive experience in digital product design, managing a small design team, providing strategic direction for complex, data-driven platforms. Past experience working on UN related products or platforms is a plus. Proven experience in defining product strategy and developing product roadmaps from a user-centric perspective. Experience in organizing, planning and executing user research. Expertise in design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite). Proven experience in leading data visualization and interactive geospatial projects, excellent communication and collaboration skills.
