Work LocationParis, France Expected duration12 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe UN Environment Programmeโ€™s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-driven, action-focused initiative that drives deep reductions in methane emissionsโ€“ the second biggest contributor to global climate change and a key opportunity to reduce warming in the near-term. IMEOโ€™s mission is to provide the open, reliable, and actionable methane data needed to cut emissions at the speed and scale necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. To do this, IMEO is harnessing a methane data revolution under way thanks to rapidly advancing technology and momentum for methane action. IMEO collects, integrates, and reconciles data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national emissions inventories. These initiatives are game-changers for climate action โ€“ and as a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge, IMEO is shaping the future of methane mitigation. IMEO seeks a Senior Communications Expert to enhance visibility and implement communication activities of UNEPโ€™s methane portfolio in particular IMEO. The Senior Communications Expert will develop communications and advocacy strategies, identify strategic events to engage in, manage IMEOโ€™s digital presence and support the production of communications, marketing and advocacy materials and knowledge products. Qualifications/special skillsUniversity Degree/Masterโ€™s in social sciences, journalism, marketing, mass communications or other related fields. โ€ข At least 5 (five) years of professional work experience in communications, journalism, public relations with a focus on climate change or environmental issues. โ€ข Advanced skills in content management, storytelling and media relations. โ€ข Experience in conducting online and offline campaigns, multimedia products development and implementation. โ€ข Experience in using office software packages. Knowledge of specific software for digital content production is an asset. โ€ข Previous work with UN agencies is an asset. โ€ข A good understanding of methane emissions, energy and oil & gas is a strong advantage. โ€ข Advanced skills in content management, storytelling and media relations. โ€ข Experience in conducting online and offline campaigns, multimedia products development and implementation. โ€ข Experience in using office software packages. Knowledge of specific software for digital content production is an asset. โ€ข Previous work with UN agencies is an asset. โ€ข A good understanding of methane emissions, energy and oil & gas is a strong advantage. LanguagesFluency in written and spoken English is required for this position. Working knowledge of other UN languages is a plus. Additional InformationThe Senior Communications Expert will be responsible for the following tasks: โ€ข Coordinate the activities of IMEO communications team, including the Digital Media Expert and content specialist(s). โ€ข Identify opportunities for growth and development of IMEO communication activities, as well as contribute to the collaboration with broader UNEP communications. โ€ข Support the development and implementation of an overarching communications strategy for IMEO, including the OGMP 2.0, science and MARS workstreams, aimed at raising visibility and awareness of the outcomes and activities among key audiences, namely oil and gas companies, investors, Energy officials, NGOs, researchers and the media. โ€ข Build and maintain a list of media contacts to engage with in order to enhance understanding of UNEPโ€™s work on methane. โ€ข Monitor media coverage on UNEP methane work and respond to inquiries in a timely manner. โ€ข Oversee IMEOโ€™s social media presence and develop a strategy to reach out to influential voices on methane. โ€ข Maintain IMEO and OGMP2.0 websites updated and aligned, as well as oversee enhancements. โ€ข Contribute to the engagement of IMEO with external stakeholders and build audience-oriented narratives to strengthen recognition and awareness of IMEOโ€™s activities. โ€ข Plan communication and advocacy initiatives around thematic campaigns, high-level events such as COPs or regional events such as Climate Weeks, key thematic international days, also jointly with key project stakeholders and partners. โ€ข Contribute to UNEP Climate Change strategy. โ€ข Draft press releases, stories, scripts. โ€ข Coordinate the launch of IMEO Institutional Report, An Eye on Methane, including liaising with the team of authors, the graphic designer, UNEP Global Lead on Climate Advocacy and Communications and UNEP Communications Division. โ€ข Develop communication plan around COPs and the launch of IMEO Institutional Report. โ€ข Design and circulate impactful and high-quality communication materials, including newsletters on UNEPโ€™s work on methane, in particular IMEOโ€™s, geared toward target audiences. โ€ข Monitor and evaluate communication effectiveness and digital media trends, adjusting strategies as needed.
