It promotes sustainable patterns of consumption and production, makes efficient use of natural resources, ensures safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. This opportunity is located within the Consumption and Production Unit at UNEP. The Unit promotes Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) in businesses worldwide, across several industrial sectors. It also supports and coordinates the Division and organizationโs work on the agenda of circularity. More specifically the work of the Division with stakeholders from the mining sector has been covering the following priority areas: 1. Environmental Governance of extractives โ Regulations / Standards: Enhance policy convening and outreach, stakeholder and capacity-building to promote better environmental governance and sustainable development goals implementation; 2. Science to Policy โ Increasing knowledge and evidence on environmental impacts: provide policy-makers and stakeholders with impartial assessments, knowledge and science on environmental threats and impacts of the extractive industries; and 3. Circular Economy โ Sustainable Value Chain โ Innovation: Work with companies and international initiatives to encourage adoption of sustainable practices along the value chain and enhance resource efficiency. The Consumption and Production Unit is leading UNEPโs work on extractive industries, including the implementation of UNEA Resolutions on environmental aspects of minerals and metals management, implementation of the Actionable Recommendations of the Secretary-General's Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, the elaboration of policy documents on the issue of energy transition minerals and the implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. In this context, the Consumption and Production Unit is looking for a consultant specifically to support tasks related to the implementation of UNEA 6 resolution on environmental aspects of minerals and metals, supporting the delivery of successful publications on energy transition minerals, drafting and obtaining approval for the project document for the mining and extractives high impact sector workstream, increasing engagement with the LAC region and drafting proposals for mobilization of funding at country and regional level on the mining value chain. 2. Purpose and Scope of Assignment The consultant will support with implementation of the UNEA 6/5 resolution on environmental aspects of minerals and metals, support with the delivery of successful publications on energy transition minerals, the implementation of the Actionable Recommendations of the Secretary-General's Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, obtain approval for project document for the mining and extractives work and drafting proposals for mobilization of funding at country and regional level on the mining value chain. They will also assist in enhancing engagement with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to advance sustainable mining practices, strengthen partnerships, and support regional implementation of UNEA resolutions. This will include the following: โข Draft publication on trade and critical energy transition minerals, by conducting a thorough review of existing literature, holding consultation sessions with experts, and incorporating their feedback in an iterative writing process. โข Development of reports and other material on critical energy transition minerals, considering aspects such as environmental equity, circularity, etc. ; โข Development of Proposals for project funding on sustainable mining practices, with a focus on circularity approaches such as remining, and mitigating environmental impacts along the value chain of the minerals; โข Support on the implementation of the Actionable Recommendations of the Secretary-General's Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals; โข Improve coordination with partners in the Latin America and Caribbean region such as through engagement in events and conferences in the Latin America and Caribbean region; โข Support in preparing internal and external briefs, as well as communication activities โข Other tasks as requested Qualifications/special skillsa. Education A Masterโs degree in environmental policy, economics, public policy, international relations, environmental, mining or chemical engineering, environmental economics, law, or related area. A first degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. b. Work Experience At least four years demonstrated experience in the field of extractive industries, environmental protection or related areas. Previous experience on project management is desirable. Previous experience with international organizations is an advantage. Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish an advantage. c.
