5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesThe International Organization for Migration (IOM) is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It supports governments and migrants by offering services and policy guidance to ensure migration is managed safely, responsibly, and with dignity; contributing to development, humanitarian response, and the protection of human rights. In the Caribbean, migration has been central to shaping the regionโ€™s identity. From the tragedy of slavery to todayโ€™s vibrant diasporas and multi-generational migrant communities, mobility remains both a cornerstone of society and an enduring aspiration. Today, the region faces growing challenges such as climate change, demographic shifts, and labor shortages among them. Migration can serve as a vital tool to enhance resilience, foster inclusive development, and support effective governance. Composed largely of small island developing states (SIDS), the Caribbean has unique vulnerabilities. Economies are dependent on imports, tourism, and remittances, with populations clustered in coastal areas. This makes countries especially vulnerable to climate-related disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and sea level rise. Without stronger investment in preparedness and adaptation, the risk of displacement is likely to grow. At the same time, ageing populations and ongoing outward migration, especially to the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., are creating labor gaps in key sectors. While CARICOMโ€™s intra-regional labor mobility offers solutions, attracting external labor may become necessary, marking a shift for a region traditionally seen as one of origin.

ContextThis assignment supports IOM Barbados, the Sub-Regional Coordination Office for the Caribbean, in its regional outreach efforts during the upcoming CARIFESTA celebration. CARIFESTA (Caribbean Festival of Arts) is the regionโ€™s premier cultural event, bringing together artists, performers, and institutions from across the Caribbean to showcase the rich diversity and creativity of the region. As part of IOMโ€™s engagement, a visually impactful banner will be developed to promote the launch of a new regional migration policy and highlight Caribbean migration stories under the theme: โ€œMy story. Your story. Our Caribbean story.โ€ The banner will be displayed at CARIFESTA to raise awareness of migrationโ€™s role in shaping the Caribbean identity.

Task DescriptionWe are looking for one Online Volunteer who, under the guidance of the communications focal point at IOM Barbados and in close collaboration with the regional communications team, will support us by producing one graphic design for a pop-up banner to be used at CARIFESTA in support of the regional migration policy. In particular, the Online Volunteer is asked to: - Collect information on the background of the banner, including the target audience, design style, and IOM branding guidelines; - Create a draft design based on requirements and discuss it with the focal point/communications team; - Develop the final design according to agreed requirements. The design/layout should follow our corporate design guidelines, which will be shared with the Online Volunteer in advance. The Online Volunteer will have the opportunity to build connections with the communications and policy team at IOM Barbados, and learn about the ways in which graphic design supports public engagement, storytelling, and policy outreach across the Caribbean region.
