Mission and objectivesUpdate UNICEF works in the worldโs toughest places to reach the most disadvantaged children and adolescents โ and to protect the rights of every child, everywhere. Across more than 190 countries and territories, we do whatever it takes to help children survive, thrive and fulfill their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. The worldโs largest provider of vaccines, we support child health and nutrition, safe water and sanitation, quality education and skill building, HIV prevention and treatment for mothers and babies, and the protection of children and adolescents from violence and exploitation. Before, during and after humanitarian emergencies, UNICEF is on the ground, bringing lifesaving help and hope to children and families. Non-political and impartial, we are never neutral when it comes to defending childrenโs rights and safeguarding their lives and futures. And we never give up.
ContextUNICEF Guinea-Bissau is dedicated to advancing the rights and inclusion of children with disabilities across all levels of society. As part of our internal commitment to disability inclusion, we aim to foster a more inclusive and accessible office environment by promoting awareness and communication tools that reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. This assignment directly supports the Disability Inclusion Focal Point at UNICEF Guinea-Bissau in creating a sign language visibility toolโa roll-up poster featuring basic signs and expressions commonly used in daily interaction. This tool will serve not only as an internal awareness-raising product but also as a potential model for wider use in government buildings, schools, and civil society organizations. The volunteerโs contribution will demonstrate how low-cost, creative solutions can drive inclusive communication and support the broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Volunteers will collaborate remotely and will be supported with clear reference materials, visual guidance, and continuous feedback.
Task DescriptionUNICEF Guinea-Bissau is committed to promoting disability inclusion in both its programmes and office culture. As part of this effort, we aim to design a roll-up poster (80x200cm) featuring a basic sign language dictionary with key daily expressions in Portuguese Sign Language (LGP) and/or relevant local sign language. The poster will be printed and displayed at the UNICEF office to raise awareness and promote inclusive communication with the Deaf community. The online volunteer(s) will use existing dictionary content and visual materials provided by UNICEF, and collaborate with the project focal point for review and feedback. The final product should be clear, culturally sensitive, and aligned with UNICEFโs branding. This is a low-cost, high-impact visibility initiative to promote inclusion and will also serve as a prototype for potential replication in schools and other institutions. The design/layout should follow our corporate design guidelines which will be shared with the Online Volunteers in advance. The Online Volunteer/s will have the opportunity to build connections with the Disability Focal Point at UNICEF and learn about the ways in which graphic design can support the disability in the workplace.
