In Indonesia, marine debris is a major threat to the environment and economy. Around 80% of it comes from land-based sources, and 30% is plastic waste—the largest non-organic component. In 2018, about 0.615 million tons of waste entered Indonesian waters. To tackle this, the government issued Presidential Regulation No. 83/2018, aiming to cut marine debris by 70% by 2025 through the National Action Plan (RAN PSL) led by the National Coordination Team on Marine Debris (TKN PSL), involving 18 ministries and agencies.

Indonesia is also active in global efforts, such as the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), working toward ending plastic pollution by 2040. To support this agenda, UNDP Indonesia’s Environment Unit runs the Marine Plastic Litter Reduction Acceleration Secretariat Project. This project works with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Food Affairs to improve coordination, raise awareness, and strengthen communication efforts.

To boost public outreach, a Graphic Design and Multimedia Assistant is needed to create engaging campaign materials that clearly communicate the importance of marine debris reduction. These visuals will help raise awareness, inspire behaviour change, and encourage action from the public and stakeholders, supporting Indonesia’s goals for 2025 and beyond.
