Geospatial Climate Change Analyst (Region 1)

Result of ServiceThe incumbent will be responsible for the following: • Extract climate data from regional climate modelling projections in GIS format for a moderate and a business-as-usual climate scenario; • Prepare 12 country fact sheets (in English) based on an agreed template, which presents maps and analysis on a common set of indicators (temperature, precipitation and extreme climate indicators, etc.); • Identify, propose and analyse using geospatial analysis one additional strategic climate indicator per country not already included in the fact sheet; • Contribute to the design and development of training materials on regional climate modelling and assessment tools (in Arabic); • Consult and coordinate with ESCWA counterparts on this and related work; • Review and finalize draft Arabic translations of the fact sheets. Work LocationRemotely Expected duration3 Months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground The Arab Centre for Climate Change Policies at ESCWA conducts geospatial analysis of climate change as part of its mandated activities under the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster. This work includes coordinating the Regional Initiative for the Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR), which advances the use regional climate models and projections to inform science-based policy and priority-setting for climate action. Objective The consultant will contribute to the preparation of a series of fact sheets that present climate change impacts on Arab countries in Western Asia, as well as the development of training materials on regional climate modelling assessment tools and applications in the Arab region. Duties and responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Sustainable Development Officer for Climate Change and the overall supervision of the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster Lead, the consultant would: (1) Prepare a series of 12 country fact sheets (10-12 pages each) for Arab States in Western Asia based on RICCAR regional climate projections, and contribute to the finalization of country fact sheets; and (2) Contribute to the design and preparation of training materials related to regional climate modelling in the Arabic language. Qualifications/special skillsA Master’s degree in geography, climate change, engineering or environmental science is required. A Ph.D. is desirable. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of five years of experience working in the area of climate change and geospatial research and analysis is required. Demonstrated experience working with geospatial datasets related to climate change is required. Experience working on climate change issues facing Arab States located in Western Asia is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
