Program Overview
WRI Indonesia seeks to assist the Government of Indonesia in enhancing and mainstreaming innovative low-carbon development approaches to transform and decarbonize the transportation sector including addressing mobility issues in metropolitan cities of Indonesia that would pave the way for sustainable development and help achieve the governmentโs bold climate target ie. Net zero-emission.
WRI Indonesia in collaboration with the UK Government through its Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (UK FCDO) has initiated partnering cooperation under the UK Partnering for Accelerating Climate Transitions (UK PACT) to provide programmatic and technical advisory support in expediting decarbonization in Transport sector and tackle climate crisis. The project, which holds the title โAdvancing MRV System for Emission Inventory and Mitigation Actions to accelerate Transport Decarbonization in Indonesiaโ, recognizes the role of WRI Indonesia to lead policy advocacy, technical support, and analytics to National governments, particularly in designing tools and composing strategies for the transition towards a low-carbon and inclusive transportation system. This initiative builds on WRI Indonesiaโs support for the Ministry of Transport over the past two years. Together with consortium partners, the UK PACT project strengthens evidence-based policy making and monitoring systems for transport mitigation actions. Additionally, it supports stakeholders in tracking progress toward Indonesiaโs Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and in developing robust low-carbon strategies for the transportation sector.
Job Highlight
The GEDSI Intern will have the opportunity to contribute to Indonesiaโs low-carbon transition in the transport sector by integrating gender equality, disability, and social inclusion (GEDSI) perspectives into climate action. This role supports the implementation of the GEDSI Action Plan across WRI Indonesiaโs transport initiatives, ensuring that decarbonization efforts are inclusive and equitable. The internship offers hands-on experience collaborating with the GEDSI team to conduct relevant policy review, coordinating with government and partner institutions to mainstream GEDSI and promote a sustainable, inclusive transport system, as well as data collection and analysis to ensure co-benefits for transport decarbonization are shared equitably. This role will also collaborate with the mobility teams to assist in drafting technical briefs and policy roadmaps, contributing GEDSI-relevant insights in the documents.
Based in Jakarta with an office-flex arrangement, the intern will report directly to the GEDSI Analyst, while also working closely with the Urban Development Senior Program Lead. The intern will be encouraged to share lessons gained from the project with colleagues across WRI, both in Indonesia and globally. In support of WRIโs DEI commitment, the intern is expected to actively integrate equity considerations into research, workplace practices, and organizational culture.
What You Will Learn
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of sustainable mobility and transport decarbonization, including key policy frameworks, Indonesiaโs climate commitments, and international reporting standards (e.g., NDC, MRV systems, carbon levy mechanisms).
- Learn how to integrate GEDSI approaches into transport decarbonization by applying WRIโs GEDSI Action Plan to project activities, ensuring inclusivity in research, stakeholder engagement, and policy recommendations.
- Acquire hands-on experience in project management, including documentation, activity tracking, and stakeholder coordination, while contributing to the development of engagement materials and policy outputs.
- Develop technical research and data analysis skills through emission inventory tools, regulatory reviews, data management, and mitigation scenario development.
- Participate in national-level stakeholder engagement processes with governments, NGOs, and development partners, contributing to inclusive, evidence-based policy development.
- Strengthen communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on translating complex technical and GEDSI-informed findings into accessible outputs for diverse audiences.
What You Will Need
- A recent bachelorโs degree graduates or final-year students in a relevant field such as Anthropology, Sociology, Politics and Governance, Public Policy, Transportation Studies, Social or Human Geography, or a related field.
- Basic knowledge in GEDSI and demonstrated interest in climate change, transport and mobility, or sustainable development through coursework, projects, or extracurricular activities.
- Basic experience with research methodology (qualitative and/or quantitative), data management tools/software, data analysis, and literature review.
- Strong proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia, both written and spoken.
- Highly motivated, proactive, target-oriented, and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Creative problem-solver with good organizational skills and a can-do attitude.
- Legally eligible to enroll in an internship program in Indonesia.
Duration
The internship program is expected to start immediately for a 6-months period.
