Background

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Chief Security Adviser (CSA) or Deputy Chief Security Advisor (DCSA) or the Field Security Coordination Officer (FSCO), the Field Security Associate in the implementation of securityย informations and all matters relating to the management of safety and security for UN personnel in the country or in the region of assignment.ย 

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of key functions:

Assists CSA in collecting, updating and communicating information regarding the security situation in the country/region of assignment; Assists in maintaining Security Plan, including updating staff lists; Supports the CSA with the assessment of Minimum Operational Security Standards (MOSS) for the duty station; Assists in reporting security incidentsย affecting UN staff, offices and assets; Organizes and delivers training courses on security awareness and preparedness; Assistsย ย in ensuring residential (Minimum Operating Residential Security Standards โ€“ MORSS) and office safety, and security preparedness; Provides general administrative assistance to the CSA; Performs any other duties as assigned by the CSA.

Assists the CSA in collecting, updating and communicating information regarding the security situation in the country:

Support the Senior Information Officer/CSIOC in maintaining accurate, comprehensive, and operationally relevant security information products, such as daily, weekly, and monthly reports, as well as topic security assessments and briefings. Monitor UN internal sources, local and international media, and other open sources to maintain security awareness of incidents, events, and developments potentially affecting UNSMS safety and security and providing timely updates to the CSA, DO, and members of the SC and SMT on the latest security developments.. Assist in collecting and verifying Security Threat Information (STI) to support the development of Security Advisories, Alerts, and Notices. Assist the CSIOC in preparing security analyses and assessments, evaluating the security operating environment by gathering, verifying, and analyzing security information Communicate relevant security information to heads of UN agencies in a timely fashion. Maintain regular contact with Security Focal Points of UN agencies and UNDSS staff in the field locations.

Assists the CSIOC/CSA in Maintaining Key Security Documentation at the Duty Station:

Assist with the preparation and compilation of data for key documents, including the UN Security Plan, SRM, and SOPs. Support actions required during the implementation of the Security Plan.

Assists in Preparing and Delivering Security Briefings:.

Support the CSIOC in preparing and delivering security briefings to the SC, SMT, and visiting missions as needed. Regularly update briefing materials and maintain accurate records, including briefing statistics, to ensure relevance and alignment with current security policies and developments. Deliver Security Orientation Briefings for new SUNO/VIP/senior arrivals and visitors, providing a comprehensive understanding of the local security environment, including security trends, threats, and risks that may potentially impact UN staff, assets, and operations.

Performs Administrative Duties as a Backup to the CSA Assistant:

Assist with administrative tasks related to SMT and Security Cell meetings as needed. Draft agendas and send meeting invitations to members within deadlines. Record attendance and take minutes during meetings. Draft and share finalized/endorsed minutes with SMT and Security Cell members. Maintain routine and confidential correspondence files and documents. Maintain an up-to-date database of contact details for SC and SMT members. Arrange appointments, receive visitors, screen telephone calls, answer queries with discretion, and take minutes or notes at meetings.

Education:

A minimum of High school Certificate, Or; First-level University degreeย (Bachelor)ย in Political Science, Military Studies, Social Studies, Management, Business or Public Administration, or any other related field. Formal training in security risk management is an asset (FSA/LSA certified).

Experience:

A minimum of 6 years (High School) or 3 years (Bachelor) of progressively experience in security, preferably in the military or police context or related field of work is required; Prior experience with the UN system or an international NGO is desirable; Knowledge of HF and VHF radio operation is desirable; Experience in diplomatic security, protection and intelligence considered an asset; Knowledge of host country safety codes is an asset; Possession of a valid driver's license is desirable; Ability to travel is required;

Languages:

Proficiency in Arabic and English.
