Work LocationHome-based / working remotely Expected duration7 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEPโ€™s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The Knowledge and Risk Unit gathers, compiles and analyses state of the art information and data, including through monitoring activities, inventories and assessments, to allow policymakers to make informed decisions on the sound management of chemicals and waste. The Unit executes projects and covers topics related to persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disrupting chemicals, and chemicals in products, among others. The Unit also addresses issues of concern highlighted by governments, such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and assists in implementing mandates received through the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) on the Global Chemicals Outlook-II, sustainable chemistry and the Sustainable Development Goals. The consultant will support UNEPโ€™s work carrying out the following tasks: โ€ข Developing a knowledge management system to compile, organize and make available all the resources and materials on the environmental dimensions of AMR to facilitate the implementation of the project and the co-creation and collaboration among different units on this subject. โ€ข Providing technical input to the update of the Global Action Plan on AMR to reflect a One Health approach and current knowledge, including supporting the consultations, inputting documents and supporting policy- and endorsement-related processes. โ€ข Contributing to the development of documents generated by the Quadripartite organizations to map funding to improve access to resources and leverage capacity-building and implementation of national action plans on AMR, and to UNEP resource mobilization efforts. โ€ข Providing technical support in starting and strengthening the implementation of identified strategies and measures to prevent and manage AMR in the environment in key economic sectors in selected countries, and related policy processes. โ€ข Providing technical support to regional offices in the implementation of measures to prevent and address the environmental dimensions of AMR, including supporting awareness raising actions, capacity building interventions, expert group activities, and experiences and lessons learned sharing from and in the different regions. โ€ข Drafting a strategy/set of measures for integrating the environment into the National Action Plans on AMR, and the mobilisation and involvement of the environmental community in AMR-related activities and coordination mechanisms at national level. โ€ข Providing technical input and support to relevant documents including developing and supporting the development of project proposals, reports, concept notes, briefings, speaking points, communication assets. Qualifications/special skillsEducation: An advanced university degree (Masterโ€™s degree or equivalent) in chemistry, environmental or chemical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, environmental management, public health, waste management, or a closely related field is required. A first-level university degree in the same fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Special skills/knowledge: Excellent communications skills (written and oral), fluent command of English and ability to craft and deliver messages in an articulated manner. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to build robust relationships with key strategic partners, including other United Nations organizations. At least five years of relevant experience, in a field related to international chemicals and waste management, public health, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is required. A comprehensive understanding of the latest developments in the AMR agenda from a One Health perspective, including familiarity with the Quadripartite and UNEP guidelines and tools, is required. Proficiency in utilizing advanced analytical tools and data interpretation relevant to AMR is required for conducting accurate assessments and providing informed recommendations. Strong communication skills are required for preparing comprehensive reports and documentation, including clear and concise presentations of findings, recommendations, and progress reports. Capacity to employ a multidisciplinary approach, integrating knowledge from environmental science, public health, agri-food, animal health, and policy development to address the environmental dimensions of antimicrobial resistance comprehensively is required. Work experience in implementing environmental projects involving various partners, clients and stakeholders is desirable. Experience of the United Nations system in particular UNEP is an asset. LanguagesLanguages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this consultancy, fluency in oral and written English is a requirement.
