5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesUNICRI works in specialized niches and selected areas related to crime prevention, criminal justice, security governance, counter-terrorism and the risks and benefits of technological advances. The Institute contributes to United Nations policy and operations through its specialized, cutting-edge and action-oriented research, training and capacity-building programmes. Within the scope of its mandate, the Institute serves as a conduit for channelling innovative ideas from within and outside the United Nations system.

ContextThe main objective of this Online Volunteering assignment is to edit the report on terrorist exploitation of criminal activities and illicit economies\" and the articles focusing on cyber crime and cyber security for UNICRI's Magazine Freedom From Fear. Nexus between organized crime and terrorism These tasks support UNICRI's efforts on the nexus between organized crime and terrorism. In particular, the report to be edited examines the evolving relationships between terrorist actors and criminal activities in Africa, addressing persistent analytical and data gaps in the field. Moving beyond a narrow focus on terrorism financing, the study adopts a broader analytical lens centred on criminal markets and hybrid governance structures, with the aim of identifying key patterns, typologies of illicit activities, and their security implications. The findings are intended to inform more targeted and effective interventions to prevent and counter the convergence of organized crime and terrorism. Cyber Threats These tasks will also contribute to enhancing knowledge of key threats by analysing different typologies of vulnerabilities and the modus operandi of cybercriminals across the digital space. Particular attention will be paid to the systematic manipulation of fundamental internet components, such as domain names, uniform resource locators (URLs), and web traffic systems, which increasingly underpin a wide range of illicit activities targeting governments, the private sector, and civil society. In this regard, strengthening cybersecurity and building resilience against evolving cyber threats remain critical priorities, in line with UNICRI’s work on cybercrime, cybersecurity, and the responsible use of emerging technologies. Overall Alignment with UNICRI’s Mandate Both areas of work align with UNICRI’s mandate to promote justice, crime prevention, and security for peace and development. UNICRI also produces and disseminates public information materials to raise awareness, share knowledge, and engage stakeholders.
