Background

The UNDP Operations Team is composed of Human Resources (HR), Finance, Procurement, General Administration and logistics, ICT, and Security units, all of which are responsible for quality assurance, for the implementation of UNDP policies and procedures in these operational functions. The Operations team plays an instrumental role in transforming the effectiveness of UNDP Bangladesh by formulating a comprehensive service delivery platform to deliver operations solutions for all UNDP programmes and projects as well as UNDP operations services to partner UN Agencies and national counterparts.ย 

Under the overall guidance of the Operations Manager and direct supervision of the Administrative Associate ( Head of General Admin and Logistics), the Driver cum Messenger provides reliable and safe driving services ensuring high quality, safety, and accuracy of work. The Driver cum Messenger demonstrates a client-oriented approach, a higher sense of responsibility, courtesy, professionalism, and the ability to work under pressure, with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.ย 

The Driver cum Messenger provides driving and messenger services to UNDP Operations and programme staff in the CO (Country Office), Associated UN agencies, Consultants and Experts and UN staff on mission.ย 

Duties and Responsibilities

Provides driving services to Country Office and UN other Agency:ย 

Ensures provision of reliable and secure driving services byย  driving office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items andย  meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport, visa and customs formalities arrangement when required.ย  Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.ย  Ensure proper documentation of assigned vehicle related to operation and maintenance.ย  Ensure traffic rules and regulations are well understood and followed. Avoid unnecessary risks while driving.ย  Ensure all safety and security instructions applicable as per UN Standard are understood and followed.ย  Report any incident pertaining to safety and operational standard of assigned vehicle to supervisor at the earliest.ย  Make judicious decisions in case of any emergency and unusual circumstances.ย 

Ensure Proper use of vehicle:

Ensure availability of documents and necessary parts in vehicle such as Vehicle insurance, fitness, logs, map of the city/country, etc.ย  Ensure daily, weekly, periodic and other checks and carry out minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc.ย  Kept vehicle servicing record/registration/fitness and other relevant document for assigned vehicle up-to-date.ย  Maintain vehicle history book for assigned vehicle containing all important data on servicing, repair, changes, modifications etc.ย  Ensure spare tools, First Aid Box, Fire Extinguisher, ALS Items and other Safety & Security items as required in your vehicle are available and in functional condition.ย 

Provides efficient messenger services focusing on achievement of the following results:ย 

Collection and delivery of mail and other materials as required from and to the post office, government agencies and other institutions.ย  Sorting, delivery and pick up of mail from various offices; maintenance of records.ย  Packaging/packing of material received for dispatch; labeling, inserting material in envelopes and franking outgoing mail.ย 

The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Institutional Arrangementย 

Under Direct supervision of Head of Administration & Logistics and under overall guidance of Senior Operations Manager, the Driver cum Messenger provides efficient transport support to UNDP CO, Project and other UN agencies.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Secondary Education (School Certificate (SSC) Passed)ย with a valid driverโ€™s license is required.ย 

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of work experience as a driver with a safe driving record is required.

Required Skills:

DDT (Defensive Driving Training) Training.

Desired Skills:

Experience in vehicle management and maintenance.ย  Knowledge of driving rules and regulations of Bangladesh. Basic elementary knowledge of motor machines. Experience in minor repairing, particularly on common issues related to vehicle breakdown during road trips. Experience in working at development sector/public sector will be added advantage.

Language:

Fluency in English and Bangla is required.ย
