Setting and ReportingThe objective of this Convention is to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought in countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa, through effective action at all levels, supported by international cooperation and partnership arrangements, in the framework of an integrated approach which is consistent with Agenda 21, with a view to contributing to the achievement of sustainable development in affected areas. The functions of the secretariat are, among others, to make arrangements for sessions of the Conference of the Parties (COP) and its subsidiary bodies. In addition, the secretariat also provides assistance to Parties in implementing the Convention. This post is located at the Executive Office of UNCCD secretariat, duty station in Bonn, Germany. The driver will provide reliable and safe driving services to the UNCCD Executive Secretary, Deputy Executive Secretary and other high-ranking UNCCD officials and visitors ensuring the highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, and excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The Driver also demonstrates a client-oriented approach, courtesy, confidentiality, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. ResponsibilitiesUnder the direct supervision of the Executive Associate, the incumbent will perform the following duties: โข Drive office vehicles for the transport of UNCCD Executive Secretary, other high-ranking officials, visitors, UNCCD programme and operations staff, and facilitate VIP missions. โข Meets official personnel at the airport and facilitates immigration and customs formalities as required. โข Deals effectively and tactfully with officials and visitors. โข Take care of the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles, check oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, TUV, inspection, etc. โข Maintain an inventory of vehicle equipment; โข Logs of official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, greasing, etc. โข Ensures that the steps required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in an accident. โข Applies good judgment in the context of assignments given. โข Assists with office hospitality and office maintenance (fixture/physical follow-up) as required. โข Assist office staff in filing, photocopying and maintaining required records; assist in physical work related to disposal of various items, etc โข Performs any other job-related activities, acting as a backup to other support staff, if required to achieve the goals and objectives of the Unit. Work ExperienceAt least two (2) years of experience as a driver in an international organization, embassy, institutions, firms or UN system with a safe driving record is required. Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, chauffeur protocol and courtesies, and local roads and conditions is required. Experience as driver for Top Management, VIPs and ideally in an international environment is desirable. LanguagesFor this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of German and another UN official language would be an advantage. AssessmentEvaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview. Appropriate testing, as determined by the UNCCD may be required. Special NoticeAppointment against this post is for an initial period of 364 days; extension will be subject to availability of the funds. Travel within Bonn and to other locations in Germany as required, sometimes on short notice. Travel outside of the country may be required.
