5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesThe Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established on 14 December 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The Agency is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect and address the needs of refugees and stateless persons worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees and stateless persons. UNHCR works to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find protection in another State, and it identifies durable solutions for refugees, including voluntary repatriation in conditions of safety and dignity, local integration, or resettlement in a third country.

ContextThe design of the 2025 Chile Yearbook directly supports UNHCR Chileโ€™s communication and protection objectives by providing a clear and accessible overview of the operationโ€™s achievements, challenges, and strategic priorities. As UNHCR continues to strengthen partnerships and deliver assistance, protection, and solutions for forcibly displaced people in Chileโ€”particularly in a context marked by barriers to regularization, integration challenges, and rising discriminationโ€”the Yearbook serves as an essential tool for documenting progress and informing partners, donors, and the public. It also aligns with broader regional commitments outlined in the Chile Declaration and Plan of Action 2024โ€“2034, which emphasizes coordinated efforts to safeguard the rights of refugees and displaced persons across Latin America. Also, in a context of budgetary constraints affecting UNHCR and many other international humanitarian and human rights organizations, the production of this yearbook is not only a way to highlight everything achieved throughout 2025 but also a powerful tool to demonstrate the officeโ€™s capacities to donors. This edition will feature a strong testimonial component, making the yearbook an advocacy instrument aimed at centering and amplifying the voices of refugees. Yearbooks also serve as an essential transparency function by clearly communicating to stakeholdersโ€”including participants, donors, and public institutionsโ€”how resources were invested and how effective those investments were. By presenting program outcomes, and impact metrics in an accessible and visually engaging format, the yearbook reinforces accountability and builds trust. This transparency not only validates the organizationโ€™s responsible use of funds but also strengthens its credibility and long-term relationships with the broader community. To successfully contribute to this task, the volunteer should understand UNHCR Chileโ€™s focus on protection, socio economic inclusion, and strategic coordination with government and private-sector actors, as highlighted in recent operational updates. Familiarity with UNHCRโ€™s graphic guidelines and communication standards will ensure that the Yearbook reflects the organizationโ€™s global identity, clarity, and protection-centered mandate.

Task DescriptionDesign of the 2025 Chile Yearbook, which will include weekly coordination meetings and an initial briefing session to explain the visual concept and address any questions. The volunteer will be expected to design the front and back covers, lay out the internal pages, and present the final product in digital format, incorporating all revisions requested during the follow-up meetings in a timely manner. To carry out this task effectively, the volunteer is also expected to review and familiarize themselves in advance with UNHCRโ€™s graphic guidelines.
