This position is located in the Regional Integration and Trade Division (RITD), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). The Data Science Assistant will work under the general guidance of the Director of the division and directly reports to the Chief of the Market Institutions Section of RITD. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, Data Science Assistants will be responsible for the following duties: • Contributes to the preparation of responses to requests for exploration, identification, and acquisition of data sources to determine their suitability for use in shaping policy and decision making and advancing the goals of the organization. Liaises with other team members to address requests, exploring alternative data sources and bridging data gaps when required. • Supports more senior staff in maintaining a working relationship with key clients to leverage the use of data science methods to support their programmatic areas through solutions built by the team and by providing communication through channels such as meetings, email and other means. • Contributes to the preparation of input for the design and development of data science products and provides an understanding or knowledge of the data through the application of analytical methods such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, predictive analytics, data and text mining, natural language processing, statistics, and use of relevant algorithms and computational approaches. • Develops and maintains socio-economic databases and qualitative information necessary for specified assignments. • Contributes to the analysis of globalization trends with a special focus on the integration of Africa in the global economy by providing data science products and applying analytical methods to existing trade and investment data sources. • Contributes to the provision of client training and developing products, tools and processes to extend the capabilities of client offices. • Adjusts customized visualization and presentation products to reveal the findings of analysis for clients. • Prepares data sets upon request; responds to queries/requests and maintains/updates web pages. • Performs other duties as assigned. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Experience in data visualization tools is desirable. One year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
