Work LocationUN-House ESCWA Expected duration2 days Duties and Responsibilities1. Background and Objective In the Arab region, available data indicate that employment rates of persons with disabilities are much lower than those without disabilities. The situation is even worse for women with disabilities, as they face compounded disadvantages augmented by their gender and their disability status. And, despite the presence of national legislation and policies that protect the employment rights of persons with disabilities, employment of persons with disabilities still lags far behind that of persons without disabilities. This discrepancy cannot be explained by the inability or unwillingness to work on the part of persons with disabilities. Moreover, this current reality indicates the presence of several barriers that prevent the economic empowerment of individuals with disabilities, which include attitudinal and organizational barriers, as well as the inaccessibility of the labor market and education system. Furthermore, persons with disabilities face obstacles when starting their own businesses, scaling up their existing companies and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and/or accessing opportunities for training, networking and funding. To overcome these challenges, and building upon the online meeting held on 26 February 2025 entitled โ€œPromoting the Economic Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities: Success Stories and the Way Forward,โ€ the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in partnership and collaboration with the UN Global Compact Network Lebanon (UNGCNL) and ProAbled under shareQ NGO, aims to facilitate two capacity-building trainings for companies and SMEs committed to transitioning to disability inclusive workplaces in the Arab region. The first training will be held online and will be regional in scope and will serve as an introduction to and overview to workplace inclusion. The second training will be in-person and will focus on steps that must be taken to ensure an inclusive workplace; participants will be from companies and SMEs in Lebanon aiming to be more inclusive. The trainings will also represent an opportunity for companies and SMEs at the regional level to adhere to the Arab Inclusive Employment and Entrepreneurship Compact (AIEEC) which constitutes the first step towards inclusive employment. By adhering to this letter of intent, companies and SMEs commit to working progressively towards the realization of inclusive employment at their workplace. The overall aim of the trainings is to build capacity of interested companies and SMEs to become disability-inclusive workplaces in the Arab region. More specifically, the ProAbled team under shareQ NGO will provide the first training (23 September 2025), which will be online and regional, and will serve as an introduction to and overview of workplace inclusion, utilizing various tools, including ESCWAโ€™s Guide: โ€œInclusion of Disability in the Workplace.โ€ The second in-person training (24 September 2025), also facilitated by the ProAbled team, will be more in-depth and will provide an opportunity for dialogue, interactive activities and more in-depth discussions among companies and SMEs from Lebanon. 2.
