DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Regional Climate prediction Services Division (H/RCP) and in close collaboration with the CREWS West Africa project team, Services Department the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Climate analysis and forecasting:

- Develop comprehensive processes and guidance frameworks for climate condition analysis and monitoring,
- Provide technical expertise and foundational knowledge in sub-seasonal and seasonal forecasting methodologies,
- Coordinate the implementation of specialized software applications for climate data analysis,
- Establish data quality control protocols and validation procedures for predictive models,
- Implement systematic verification protocols for forecast accuracy assessment,
- Analyze sources of climate variability and develop forecasting techniques at seasonal scales using objective approaches,
- Implement climate monitoring techniques.

Capacity building:

- Design and deliver comprehensive training programs on seasonal and sub-seasonal climate forecasting techniques,
- Provide expert advisory services on objective climate forecasting methodologies,
- Develop recommendations to customize climate forecasting products tailored to the operational needs of Regional Centers across Central and West Africa.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Master's degree or equivalent in meteorology, climatology, geography, physics.
Experience
At least 3 years of operational experience and/or excellent knowledge of operations of WMO Regional Climate Centres

At least 10 years of experience in climate services production and delivery, and in particular: knowledge of and experience with each of the elements in the climate services value chain.
- climate observations,
- climate data and monitoring,
- climate modelling and prediction,
- climate research, provision and application of climate services.

Other requirements
This role requires good understanding of context and climate drivers in the West Africa regions, in drafting technical guidelines, reports, provide trainings on sub and seasonal forecast and the ability to multitask, and to work under time pressure.

Languages
Knowledge of other official languages of the WMO Secretariat is an advantage
(The working languages of the WMO Secretariat are English and French.)

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.) Proposed fee: 620-750 USD per day, depending upon experience, knowledge and skills.
